I really like give a step by step checklist and allowing students to check off the work as completed. If I give larger assignments with multiple steps I will often have "teacher checkpoints" where students must get my initials. This enables both the teacher and student to visually see how much work is getting completed or not getting completed. I also like having them work with small groups that are multi-ability leveled so that there are those natural leaders that will push the group along and keep them on task. The person is not there to do all the work for the group, but to make sure the work is getting completed.

I also like to use the alternative test/work for the student who is caught cheating. I really need to know exactly what they do and do not know, and therefore is really not an option for me. There will be a consequence, but the zero (at the fifth grade level) will probably not be that consequence.
