The story continues in the third person narrative. After receiving a phone call at work, Kate goes to pick up her daughter, Amelia, and finds out that she is dead. She apparently jumped off or fell off the roof of a school building.

This chapter is written in the first person narrative from the perspective of Amelia. Amelia talks about her experience walking to school together when they were younger, around eleven. Apparently, Sylvia is annoyed that she share personal things about her life, but Amelia does not share any of her personal detail. Also, there seems to be some "red flags" about her online friend, Ben, who does suspicious things. Amelia also gets a mysterious message from a blocked number telling her to meet at the park.

This chapter is in italics from the first person point of view of Kate, presumably 15 years ago around the time Amelia was born. Kate recalls her angst and uncertainty about her new situation

Kate recalls her feelings after the funeral of her daughter, Amelia. Kate becomes extremely annoyed with her mother on a phone call and tells her mother F you twice. She feels her mother is acting insensitive by suggesting that she move on with her life now that she has "freedom" since Amelia is dead. Then Kate receives a message from a bocked number saying "Amelia didn't jump." Jeremy then helps Kate investigate Amelia's death.

Amelia shares her thoughts with Ben about meeting with anonymous people in the park. Ben is concerned that she's going by herself but Amelia goes anyway because she's curious.

Amelia and two other girls meet with a sorority group called the Magpies. The head girls of the group are Zadie (senior, Grace Hall's "wildest child"), Rachel and Heather (seniors, field hockey co-captains), Bethany(senior, "comic relief"), and Dylan (junior, Zadie's friend). Amelia wondered why she was invited to be initiated into a sorority of pretty and popular girls.

September 14 Amelia (Text Message)

Amelia texts Ben after the meetup with the Magpies. They talk about the meeting and think they all bark no bite. Sylvia then texts Amelia about where she was which Amelia lied about being at field hockey practice. Then one of the Maggies texted through a blocked number giving Amelia an initiation mission. Lastly another block number texts "who's your daddy?".

November 26 - Kate (Pt. 1)

Kate tries to investigate Amelia's room when Detective Molina calls asking why she was unsatisfied with his work on Amelia's case. They have an argument which leads to Molina not helping Kate to further investigate or give files on the case. Feeling awful about what happened, Kate reminisces about Amelia remembering that a couple of weeks before she passed Amelia asked about her dad. Then Seth accidentally sneaks up on Kate and helps with investigating Amelia's room while Kate looks into Amelia's bag downstairs.

Charlie Kugler's (new maggie) Yale boyfriend wants her out of the maggies and Tempest Bain (new maggie) has an eating disorder. A guy named George McDonnell is smoking marijuana again and a girl named Liv keeps getting stood up.

November 26 - Kate (Pt. 2)

They're trying to find anything that'll tell them if Amelia killed herself or not. Kate finds that Amelia's phone has a password, she texted a lot of people (named/blocked), the existence of Ben/gRaCeFULLY, the paper Amelia supposedly cheated on, 367 contacts, and that Amelia has had intercourse. Seth then shows Kate 22 "I hate you" notes found in Amelia's desk and Kate's old journals under her bed. A PTA member (Zadie's mom) then stops by asking to hold a memorial for Amelia and how students want to sponsor a suicide awareness benefit. Kate quickly declines everything and slips a little about the investigation to the PTA member.
