Religion plays an integral role in the personal identity of the Burmese culture. The main religion of Myanmar is Buddhist "(87.9%). However, there are also minorities of Christians (6.2%) and Muslims (4.3%), as well as some Animists (0.8%) and Hindus (0.5%)". (Evason, 2017) Throughout Myanmar, religion has become a point of conflict as "Burmese Buddhist nationalism became highly politicized in the early 20th century for the role it played in the independence movement against the British" (Evason, 2017) and is often associated with the national identity of Myanmar. This friction was then heightened due to the differences in ethnic groups' core beliefs and followings.
