The Malta Anthropological Society would like to proudly announce that this year, we will be one of a number of anthropologically focused organisations participating in the European Association of Social Anthropologists’ global event ‘Why The World Needs Anthropologists’.

This is the 12th edition of this annual event which forms part of EASA’s Applied Anthropology Network, focuses on the ways in which anthropology and anthropologists can examine the world around them and discuss various topics, either by applying an anthropological lens to the bigger issues or bringing attention to subjects that aren’t in the spotlight.

This year will follow the latter, with the topic of ‘Centering the Periphery’ which aims to give a space to things that seem to fall outside the more commonly focused subjects in the field.

One such topic that M.A.S. will focus on will centre around linguistics and how that generally effects and identifies cultural points of view, expression and thinking, as well as how such things change with time and hold meaning.

From the lens of linguistic diversity, Anthropology within Malta and the broader view of the Mediterranean, covers topics of nationhood and ambivalence of identity.

Although not demonstrating dominance in anthropological literature, such topics have been put into question through the lenses of diaspora, colonial history and geographical positionality. The perceived deconstruction of linguistic dynamics in Malta, reflects the various constructions of social diversity, and thereby nationwide plurality and preference to the various forms of bilingualism that linguists have even considered to be "self-assigned" by the Maltese.

Linguistic peripheries and thereby preferences can and have been demonstrated in various forms, nowadays being far more widespread.

Alongside the two books:
- Aphorisms by Manuel Dimech
- Mela by Antoinette Borg

this will also entail a discussion on mobilities in their peripheries. Vincent Vella's Slippery Steps explores and recasts issues of mobility, migration, and cultural identity.

Placing its key characters in what sociologist Ulrich Beck (2006, 103) has referred to as “cosmopolitanism from below”, a form of everyday border-crossing travel by migrants seeking work, or journeying to new spaces for other reasons, Vella’s novel shows how Maltese identities have been constructed in historical and contemporary encounters with various cultural and linguistic others.

This event will be an open discussion, it is linguistics after all, so whether you’re a First-Year student navigating Fresher’s week, a current student looking for something outside your syllabus, a graduate who’s looking for more or someone with an interest in the field you are more than welcome to join us.

This will be a 'discussion over lunch' workshop, at indicā, a clean eating start up in Delhi.

indicā goes beyond traditional dining. The founders and team at Indica encourage culinary creativity and exploration of the marginal in their events and workshops, and foster a dynamic and inclusive environment all through. Customers become participants in the shaping of a culinary journey - everybody contributes to create a vibrant and ever-changing feast of cuisines and experiences.

For this reason, Anthropie has decided to tie up with indicā to host a unique workshop as part of the WWNA at Home celebrations. Our workshop will start with a short walk through of indicā, where the founders will explain the concept behind the restaurant. Our main event will be centered around our lunch: we will create a unique 'thali' (round platter - set meal in Hindi) consisting of dishes from the Indian north east. This workshop will focus on centering foods and experiences of anarchic hill tribes. We will explore the role root vegetables, vine fruit and edible forest greens played in helping these tribes survive as they hid in the hills from valley kingdom rulers and their foot soldiers; and how, with changing political systems, food plates have transitioned to include above-ground foods such as red rice and salt.

Each item in the thali will reflect a political and cultural experience. We hope to have a Lisu tribal chef join us on the day, but if not, we will replicate her recipes for the event.

We will also invite other anthropologists and sociologists, and any other researchers to send in suggestions for poster presentations, to present their own work and insights on marginal cuisines and the cultures/dynamics they're linked to.

Last but not least, we will ask all participants to contribute a recipe that isn't mainstream, with a story (ex: my grandma used to make this fish chutney...etc.) to indicā before they leave. indicā's team will select from these and showcase the most intriguing recipes/stories in their own menus.

How can we apply our knowledge outside academia and make a difference in society? What are the ways we can transform scientific knowledge into action? The aim of WWNA at Home is to consider how anthropologists can better serve communities that are often overlooked, and how the discipline itself can evolve to include more diverse and peripheral viewpoints. For the Sydney event there will be topics provided for participants to brainstorm and discuss based on this aim. Summaries of discussions, ideas and solutions generated in Australia will be provided for inclusion in the WWNA conference broadcast on 25-26 October.

Our aim is to figure out how anthropology can bring in peripheral perspectives to lead to new, important and valuable input and outcomes for communities we work with, and the discipline itself. We have prepared 2 topics (one local, one global):

TOPIC 1: Housing

Question 1: How can we elevate and integrate the voices of those pushed to the margins, ensuring inclusive, equitable, and sustainable solutions for all in Sydney's housing? If this was led by anthropologists, what would it look like?

TOPIC 2: Healthcare

Question 2: How can we reshape medical care for neurodivergent Australians by amplifying marginalised voices to ensure inclusive, equitable, and sustainable solutions for all? If this was led by anthropologists, what would it look like?

Participants will receive a private tour of the exhibit "MINE: What is Ours in the Wake of Extraction" (https://exhibitions.lib.udel.edu/mine/). After that, they will meet outside Mechanical Hall or in a classroom (Alison Hall 131) to talk about how one of the concepts of the exhibit, extractivism, connects with the discipline's long experience of metaphorical (and sometimes literal) extractivism. Then, they will discuss how this practice can be challenged and how centering the periphery can help anthropology eliminate extractivism.

This activity is part of an anthropology course (ANTH 200 History of Anthropological Theory), but it is open to the public. No registration needed.

It's time for public anthropology! In the AnthroArt project and in the broader applied anthropology community in Amsterdam and Europe, conversations are ongoing on how to increase our impact. How can we better serve communities that are often overlooked, and how can the discipline itself evolve to include more diverse and peripheral viewpoints? Medical students is largely influenced by medical education and the health system in which we operate. For many years, this has been focused on a biological and medicalized vision, which concentrates or specializes in the disease, leaving aside comprehensive health and the different processes that connect them.

As Robert Hahn states: “Biomedicine appears to focus on specific diseases and their cure. Its focus is not on health, (…) but rather on diseases being considered purely natural. We as Faculty of Medicine at PUCE are interested in the person and in the social and cultural system (communities) that built the cultural idea of diseases.

The relationship between the center and the periphery for Russian urban anthropology is an insufficiently reflected problem, which is especially acutialize in applied researches related to urban development. Therefore, I invite all applied anthropologists and social researchers, urbanists to join the discussion in Moscow on 20.10 at 14.00 in the Nekrasov Library. To be fair, social researchers, activists, philosophers, geographers and economists have been actively research the spectrum of understanding of urban places by different communities, expplore problems of invisible everyday life, the needs and voices of people, which do not fall into the conventional practices and rules of life in the city or its places And it seems that we have already became to paying attention in applied researches to teenagers (especially young adults), women in their various social roles, people in a state of homelessness and people with disabilities. However, often "noticing" such a spectrum of everyday practices and values in researches does not always lead to real consideration and implementation of conclusions in spatial development projects, educational or corporate initiatives. Or is this, rather, a fashionable trend in the methodology of research? In addition, to this problem related to the practical side of the matter, there is a deeper, fundamental problem of considering the city in urban studies and a large number of disciplines studying the modern city and its management, proceeding from an extremely deterministic position, including further producing the opposition center-periphery not only for the delimitation and hierarchization of urban spaces, but also inevitably - their socio-cultural dimension. I invite my colleagues applied anthropologists and more broadly: all social applied and academic researchers who are interested in discussing and reflecting on their cases of the social and spatial embodiment of the opposition center-periphery in Moscow or Russian cities in which you have researched or participated in urban development projects.
