The acuity of patients in cardiac and step-down units has been increasing over the years. Patients that would have been assigned to critical care units are now cared for in telemetry. This warrants advanced training for nurses who work at various levels of acuity within a hospital system. Additionally, while this may seem like a great environment for nursing students to learn, the abundance of nursing schools and lack of clinical sites means that clinical placement for students is an issue. By having a simulator such as Next Generation Hervey in a facility, be it medical or educational, healthcare learners have the ability to learn without being constricted by factors like time or availability. Furthermore, having a high quality simulator like Harvey enables the use of standardized simulations as well as standardized evaluations.

Strengths & Team Building

My top 5 strengths are: Strategic, Deliberative, Ideation, Arranger and Connectedness. Based on these strengths I have built the following team:

Carter (Communication) All teams works best when they have proper communication. I am very strategic, but planning and decision making won't make much sense without communicating a clear plan or vision to the team. Communication towards end users will also be essential once implementation of the simulator takes place.
Fernando (Focus) His ability to focus will complement my abilities of Ideation and Deliberation. Being able to distill what we want and need to do will be a great assets to the team, especially when implementing new technology.
Daisy (Developer) As new technologies become available, new problems will arise. I will work with Daisy to formulate an action plan to help those that will have trouble with Harvey. Additionally, Daisy will scout out talent within the organization to recruit as potential "super users."
William (Woo) Resistance to change is a recurrent theme in healthcare. Harvey will be of no use if nobody wants to use this new tool. As such, William's unique strength is to "win" staff/faculty over so that they can be open to exploring how the simulator benefits learners.
Emily (Empathy) Feedback is an important component of any project. Emily will be in change or gathering both qualitative and quantitative data. Her empathic ability will ensure that we have well rounded feedback on of how our innovation is making an impact.

The Laerdal Medical corporation is a distributor of Next Generation Harvey. Laerdal is a well known simulator manufacturer, their product line includes the iconic Resuci Anne mannequin used to teach CPR (Laerdal, 2019). However, the original Harvey simulator in not a product of Laerdal and was actually created at The Gordon Center in the University of Miami in 1968 (Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education [GCRME], 2019). Harvey’s teaching focus is assessment. The simulator has gone through several revisions and updates culminating in the latest model denominated Next Generation Harvey. The Gordon Center is recognized as a leader in medical education research by agencies such as the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association, the Florida Department of Health and more (GCRME, 2019).

Next Generation Harvey is an innovative update to the Harvey line of simulators. The previous simulators allowed for the assessment of 10 conditions via the playback of physical media. Next Generation Harvey on the other hand can replicate almost any cardiac pathology. The simulator can portray up to 50 conditions, it is portable and comes with various learning modules. It has both cardiac and pulmonary auscultation features and digitally driven pulses. It has speech capability allowing the learner to practice history taking. It has digital software options for those that want to expand their learning experience or teaching curriculum (GCRME, 2019).

[Digital photograph of Next Generation Harvey Capabilities] (n.d.)
