While the time commitment and risks of exploitation may deter some, it offers opportunities for personal development and making a meaningful impact in society . However, it's essential to recognise that direct assistance can contribute to positive change in societies globally. Despite the challenges, refusing to help those in need raises the question: if not us, then who?

Volunteering abroad or what we call ‘Voluntourism’ is the idea of volunteering your time, skills, and energy with an organization, issue, or causes to help make a difference in communities around the world as part of your vacation package. ‘Voluntourism’ has been a controversial issue on whether ‘Voluntourism’ should be encouraged or not. On the one hand, people argue that Volunteerism is encouraged as it develops a person sense of purpose and increases interactions with diverse people. On the other hand, people feel ‘Voluntourism’ should not be encouraged as the act may seem selfish due to it being more beneficial for the person volunteering than the people who we volunteer for and the lack of thought for the people we are volunteering for.

Volunteering is one of the most common forms of philanthropy. Known as a selfless from the more privileged helping the less fortunate, it has started to gain some controversy on how much it actually helps others in need. Philosophers argue that volunteerism benefits the individuals that are helping the people in need more than the people that actually require the help. The purpose of volunteerism is to assist less fortunate and allow them to live an easier life. It also helps the volunteers as it helps them learn certain skills and also grow individually. On the flip side, some argue that the volunteers benefit more than the people who are on the receiving end. It may also be time consuming for others as some groups are unable to make time for the task due to other commitments which will make the volunteering programme time consuming and will be mentally draining for the volunteers

Firstly, voluntourism can allow one to expand their knowledge about other cultures. Till today, being knowledgeable about other cultures brings about a positive impact to the society. When volunteering overseas, one does not only go there for volunteery work but also to explore the historical places of that particular country. Through these experiences, one can learn more about the history and culture, hence, understanding another culture more. For example, an organisation called 'ProjectAbroad' states that volunteers can use their time and energy to help others while exploring a different country and culture. This indicates that during voluntourism, one can explore the different aspects of a particular culture like cuisines, places and costumes. Thus, voluntourism can allow one to expand their knowledge about other cultures.

Secondly, voluntourism can also help with one's personal development. Volunteers usually takes the self-initiatives to participate in a non-profitable event like voluntourism. Voluntourism can be one of the extremely important components for self-growth as it involves individuals gaining the opportunity to provide their personal contributions out of their own will. In an organisation called 'United Nations Volunteers', many volunteers have stated that participating in voluntourism has helped them overcome problems in the family and scoring a positive outcome such as being able to achieve peace without having to argue. For example, voluntourism allows one to become more patient and resilience in the face of challenges which can benefit one's improvement. Thus, voluntourism can help with one's personal developments.

Firstly , volunteering abroad should be encouraged as it might be able to be a platform of exposure to people of different backgrounds be it race , religion or culture . Through cultural programmes that may arise from this , not only would we get to learn about new cultures , but we’d also be developing our character as we learn the differences between norms . For example , Republic Polytechnic's school of hospitality arranges annual student overseas trips for students to gain overseas exposure and volunteering experience. This programme allows students to diversify themselves as they’re exposed to new norms , all in which would lead to character development .Thus this shows that volunteering abroad may be more beneficial for us as we may be able to learn more things outside of our comfort zones.

Secondly , we’d be able to reach a wider group of target audience for us to empower , impact and engage with . This offers more opportunities for community engagement , volunteering experience charcter developement. This especially affects humanitarian projects as we’d be able to help more people away from our communities . The International Volunteer HQ accomodates a project for childcare in ubud where we can assist local childcare teachers with both formal and informal english lessons for kids , aiming to give them a head start with basics in literacy. This project gives us an opportunity to volunteer outside of our communities and impact and empower at a larger scale . All in which links back to how volunteering abroad could expose us to such opportunities that would be not only beneficial for us but would also be beneficial for the receiving end .

Firstly, volunteering overseas allows for volunteers to be able to learn about other countries and their situations. Today many go abroad to volunteer but in the heat of helping out, the we also learn a lot about the place that we are volunteering at. For example, Greg Mortenson who was rescued by the villagers in Pakistan. He went around and learnt about the different cultures that were there in the area. This inspired him to promote education for girls in the area. Though he was not around for a long period Being rescued and living in the area for a period of time can allow for a person to learn about the culture and the community. And the person might even promote certain values or cultures from the area. Which helps to reach out to more people and might even help out the area in terms of their situation as people are exposed to this situation that the village is going through. Thus volunteering overseas can provide some outreach efforts and volunteers can learn about other countries and their situation.

Secondly, volunteering overseas can help the environment of other countries improve. Many times these days many people put so much emphasise on how we need to improve the environment and volunteering is a way to help in this movement. For example, Louis Masai who is a Swiss volunteer in Kenya who is trying to help with the sustainability of the Kenya national park, where she helps out at the tree nursery and also providing jobs for the locals so that they do not need to hunt animals. Through her efforts, the environment of Kenya would be able to self sustain in the near future. With many of her efforts being non-profit she might be able to make a huge impact on the community with the support she is giving to the local environment. Thus through these volunteering opportunities and we do it with all our heart and willingness, we are able to help the environment improve.

Firstly , volunteering abroad has its pros and cons. Starting off with it's pros , volunteering abroad allows us to expand and widen our portfolio to give off a sense of individuality to others . Volunteering requires many values such as taking initiative, giving time and being able to provide care for others. Having these values means having to sacrifice something . With many opportunities ranging from school to jobs and careers , volunteering especially overseas shows the flexibility and sacrifices we are willing to make for others, which gives off a first good impression to many people, giving us good opportunities for our future. Thus, one of the advantages of volunteering overseas is allowing us to expand and build up our portfolio whilst opening new doors to greater journeys.

Apart from that, volunteering overseas also gives us a perspective to being in the shoes of the less fortunate. There is no point sacrificing our time and efforts helping the underprivileged when we just waste whatever we learned and remain ungrateful for what is around us. Thus , we can take extra steps by not looking up to ourselves as 'gods' but put ourselves in their shoes. This charity we are doing isn't useful unless we spend the time reflecting on how we should stop taking things for granted and by impacting each other by sharing the underprivileged views too.If more people are aware of it , there will be a bigger change that we yet to see.

An advantage of voluntourism that sticks out to me is that it broadens your perspective on life. Many people think that provisioning for others will be fulfiling the receiving end's needs, enabling them to show gratitude because of how grateful they are and how it has helped them greatly. I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but that isn't all true. Most people who volunteer often, benefits more from the experience than the receiving end. This is because the receiving end will only gain short-lived happiness and can come off as charity work, while the giving end can earn valuable life skills like seeing things from a different perspective. Having this skill is beneficial and will help you to understand that even though your intention is good, it may not come off as kind. Hence, why you must always be considerate and think before you talk or do something.

However, it doesn't mean you shouldn't volunteer as it also makes a difference to the receivers' lives whether big or small. This is because when volunteering, many of the activities that is planned out is already thought of in advanced to ensure improvements to the one's in need's lives. Taking initiative is also a big value of one's life as if you are willing to do something whether for your own good or someone else's good, whether long-term or short-term it shows that you are being considerate. It is important to show appreciation towards those who have helped us like the one's lending a helping hand because in the long-term, you'll realise how much of a difference it many make in your live and it might no be very potent but it'll surely affect you in a way.

Firstly, volunteering overseas allows you to learn more about the countries cultural lifestyle as well as providing you with a chance to interact with others who had different background. This could be a chance for you to communicate with others of different background and appreciate their diverse opinion creating a strong bond with the citizens residing there. An example of this would be the Singapore government engaging students to learn about other culture and lifestyle through participating in other countries. This has invited broader perspective about others cultural and people are starting to appreciate others for their differences. Not only that, participating in overseas volunteering improves teamwork and team spirit as it provides a chance to interact with others and work together with them. This would eventually improve your ability to work with others and fosters a deep understanding of others perspective. Thus, volunteering abroad fosters deep understanding and team spirit.

Secondly, volunteering abroad will also be a platform for you to gain new working skills and work experience. This may be beneficial in your work by providing different solution , an example of this would be an article that I read about a english teacher who volunteered in India , he said that volunteering abroad allowed him a chance to develop new skills like patience . Volunteering abroad could not only gain work skills but also new experiecne which may help you in the future and lessons which you could use in your life. This may boost your moral discipline which is essential in life. Thus , volunteering abroad will help ou to gain new work experience

one benefit of volunteering abroad is that volunteering abroad can bring benefits like personal improvement and development as one can feel a sense of accomplishment for making an impact on others .For example, volunteers located in Africa reported their experience was emotionaly rewarding as they could make a difference in someones life. This can contribute to the development and improvment in character.

Another benefit for volunteering abroad is that the volunteer could talk about his experience in his portfolio in order to get a better chance of getting real jobs. Being a volunteer can also give others the impression that you are generally a good person because they took the initiative and spent alot of time to help make a positive impact on people overseas. For examples, during job interviews, the interveiwer might ask about personal experiences which you can talk about volunteering. this could make someone think more highly of you and more likely to consider you for a job.

Firstly, volunteering abroad can make you discover something new about others' culture. By going overseas, you are surrounded by unfamiliar surroundings. Every country has its own different cultures. For example, in Thailand locals usually travel around using Tuk Tuks for transport and delivery. There is also social etiquette in Thailand such as, patting the head of a Thai person or pointing the bottom of your feet at them. By volunteering with local oraganisations, there can be culture exchange between you and the community or orphans. You can be exposed to the different traits that the locals have and even pick up the good ones. This may help you make a bigger impact as you are inclined to their culture and can create special bonds with the orphans. Therefore volunteering abroad allows cultural exchange by learning about others’ cultures.

Secondly, by volunteering abroad, it could possibly help you in terms of self-growth. Having the self-interest to improve on one’s self by volunteering is one big step for personal development. Many people who struggle with low-self-esteem find that volunteering allows them to have confidence and build on their social skills. By giving them opportunities to communicate with different people such as orphans, their teammates, they are able to improve their communication skills. Volunteering could also be very beneficial to individuals who are finding a sense of purpose in life. For example, they are tasked to build a shelter for the orphans or people who are homeless, this motivates them to do something meaningful and making a difference in others’ lives. Thus, volunteering can benefit individuals in terms of personal development.

Firstly, volunteering abroad allows one to gain a broader perspective on global issues. For example, Mandi Schmitt posted and article online about volunteering abroad, she found out that she started researching on news headline of the countries that she engaged with before, as she wants to keep up with the events there. Though, not everyone would feel exactly the same as her, but it would definitely be beneficial as a part of learning. Volunteering abroad could provide opportunities for you to interact with the different events that are happening there. Thus, volunteering abroad allows a person to gain a broader perspective on global issues which can be beneficial.

Secondly, volunteering abroad might lead to self-improvement. Volunteering abroad can be a good time to contribute back to the community. Studies have shown that by volunteering abroad, you would develop greater self-awareness by confronting new challenges and reflecting on your experiences. You may improve yourself through all the challenges that would be facing throughout the trip. There would also be opportunities that might allow you to develop new skills or improve on the current skill. Thus, volunteering abroad will lead to self-improvement.

Firstly, volunteering overseas engages you in their cultural activities. You can gain first hand experiences of the local customs, traditions and cultural practices. Through this experience, you can broaden your perspective and foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of diversity. You can have cultural understanding with the locals there and can easily interact with them. This creates a strong bond among people across countries through cultural understanding. For example, Alex Simonelli, a 25-year-old recent graduate from Canada, volunteered abroad in Ghana for six months with a local Non-Governmental Organisation focusing on community health and education. He embraced Ghanaian culture by learning the local language, participating in traditional ceremonies, and living with a host family. Through these experiences, he gained valuable insights into Ghanaian customs, traditions, and way of life. Alex's volunteer experience transformed his own perspective and understanding of cultural diversity, as evidenced by the survey results. Thus, volunteering abroad fosters cultural understanding.

Secondly, volunteering abroad develops personal growth. It can push you out of your comfort zone and discover new things that might catch your attention. It will challenge you to overcome obstacles and gain valuable skills like problem-solving, communication, and teamwork. This can promote your personal growth and increase your self-confidence. For instance, Stephanie Maddox, a research fellow in the Neurobiology of Fear Laboratory at McLean Hospital, once said that she stepped out of her comfort zone and volunteered in two different countries. One of them is Uganda, and she visited the people in Tabiro village. She wanted to understand the challenges the people in the Tabiro village faced and how she could assist and mentor them in a sustainable way. This engages her in fundraising or financially supporting a charity. This trip led her through different thought exercises and discussions to process what she saw and think critically about how she could help through donations or any other ways that the community can sustain on their own. This helped her to be initiative in helping people in need, gain critical thinking skills and problem solving skills, developing her personal growth. Hence, volunteering abroad develops personal growth.

Firstly, Volunteering abroad promotes cultural immersions between locals and people of other countries. When one travels abroad, it is inevitable for conversations to happen between tourist and locals through the participation of events, Volunteering activities, carnivals... As these conversations go on, locals and tourists may start to understand more about each other's culture, belief and interest through time. These understandings allows for a wider range of cultural understanding for both the tourists and locals. Which leads to mutual understanding and achieves a sense of accomplishment in the tourist. For example if you volunteer abroad in Thailand, one activities you can expect to participate in would be the Boisterous Event, where locals and tourist spray water at each other. These is an perfect example of cultural immersion as tourist can become open to the Thai culture and might be able to get to know more about Thai Culture via communication. They may also show their acceptance and cultural understanding towards the Thai culture by participating in Boisterous Event. Spraying Water in Thailand symbolises cleansing, reverence and good fortune to the locals, This can make the locals feel the generosity of tourist and also appreciated for being accepted. On the other hand, tourist may also feel accepted to another's culture. Thus, volunteering abroad can bring about more opportunity for culture to interact and bond.

Secondly, Volunteering abroad also increase your Networking opportunities. As you assist the locals abroad, there would always be a instructor-in-charge that would take down your traits and drawbacks of your characteristics . If you can perform exceptionally well, which means you are able to interact, play and lead the locals, you may be awarded a prize from your volunteering organisations. These are not the small prize presentations you have in school or at work, the organisers of volunteering abroad projects usually come from big organisation, this means that they provided many resources for the projects to happen. These prize presentations ceremony are usually high-class ceremonies that happen at high-end places. These places can help you promote yourself to organisers, directors, producer. Therefore, improving and also increasing your networking opportunities.

Firstly, Volunteering abroad would help to develop a sense of purpose as it helps to create a more meaningful travel experience. When volunteering, it provides a natural sense of accomplishment from taking the initiative to do good for the community. Through the aid of others, it will benefit your personal growth through new skills and hence adding to your sense of purpose. From VolunteerHub, 96% of volunteers have reportedly achieved a sense of purpose in life after volunteering. Being able to contribute positively to the community would further enrich their sense of purpose.

Secondly, Volunteering abroad would increase interactions with diverse people. Volunteering may allow people to socialise with others from different backgrounds such as disabilities, under privilege and poorer living conditions. This brings volunteers new perspective allowing them to sympathise with others and better appreciate ones life. From Straits Times 60% of the people in Singapore Volunteering shows volunteering increase interactions with diverse people. Hence, Volunteering abroad would increase interactions with diverse people.

Firstly, volunteering abroad provides a unique opportunity for individuals to engage in meaningful Cultural Exchange while promoting empowerment and humanitarianism. Volunteering abroad offers a profound avenue for individuals to immerse themselves in diverse cultures, fostering genuine exchanges that transcend geographical boundaries. One of the most compelling aspects of volunteering abroad is the first-hand exposure to local customs, traditions, and ways of life. Volunteering abroad often involves collaborating with local organizations or grassroots initiatives, providing volunteers with a platform to learn from local leaders and changemakers. This engagement goes beyond mere aid or assistance; it embodies advocacy for community development and social cohesion. Moreover, volunteering abroad often involves engaging in cultural exchange through activities such as learning local cuisines, participating in traditional music and dance, and visiting historical sites, as exemplified by a volunteer in Peru who contributed to environmental projects while immersing herself in Peruvian culture through cooking classes, dance performances, and visits to historic landmarks like Machu Picchu. These experiences fostered mutual understanding and appreciation between the volunteer and local communities, highlighting the transformative power of cultural exchange during volunteer abroad experiences.

Secondly, Volunteering abroad is a transformative experience that profoundly broadens the perspectives of those who choose to embark on such journeys. One of the most significant ways volunteering abroad achieves this is by exposing individuals to new cultures, customs, and ways of life that are vastly different from their own. By immersing themselves in a foreign community, volunteers gain firsthand insight into the challenges, traditions, and values of the people they are serving. This exposure fosters empathy and understanding, as volunteers come to appreciate the diversity of human experiences beyond their own familiar surroundings. For instance, consider a student from a privileged background who volunteers in a rural village in Africa, assisting with community development projects. Through this experience, they witness firsthand the daily struggles of families living without access to clean water or adequate healthcare. This exposure challenges their preconceived notions about poverty and privilege, leading them to question their own assumptions and privilege. They return home with a newfound appreciation for the resources and opportunities they often take for granted. This embodies altruism and civic responsibility, demonstrating the profound impact of philanthropy in fostering global understanding and benefitting communities worldwide.

A: Firstly, volunteering abroad is a way to gain valuable experience and develop essential skills that can be used for personal and professional growth. One can gain memorable experiences from helping out in the charity, from traveling overseas and experiencing life together with your team to helping out and teaching underprivileged. Our humanitarian efforts and sacrifices benefit both parties taking part in the community service. The ones' reaching out can gain a sense of achievement while immersing themselves in different diverse cultures and environments.

B: Not only that, doing meaningful, socially responsible work can help one sharpen their skills while making a difference in the community. This opportunity can be used to practice important skills that can be applied in the future, be it in the workplace environment or anywhere else. For example, Stephanie Davis, recently embarked on a journey as a volunteer abroad. She volunteered at Costa Rica as she wanted to make a difference while immersing herself in a new culture. Not only did she take part in conservation work with her collaborators, she managed to forged deep connections with her fellow volunteers and learned more about the culture there. She managed to step out of her comfort zone during the whole trip and adapt to her surroundings. She even learnt the base of a new language!

Firstly, Voluntourism allows volunteers to learn new morals. It can encourages us personal development while helping the community. As a form of charity, we learn how to be selfless as we can learn that we are very privileged and might even make one to understand how to be generous. It is a form of goodwill which can make the volunteers feel better. Plus, the whole voluntourism is a learning opportunity to all volunteers. A survey by Straits Times mentioned that 62.7 percent really want to give back to the community so hence, Voluntourism allows volunteers to learn new morals

Secondly, voluntourism, being a form of travelling, volunteers are able to have cultural exchange. Volunteers can get to learn how different cultures eat and music, and even the habits that they have. They can get to understand the people around the world better and see how different they are compared to them. As an article by GivingGetaway states that voluntourism does encourage cultural exchange as volunteers are willing to learn more about the different cultures

Firstly,Firstly, volunteerism abroad can help you gain life experiences that you are unable to get in your own hometown. By going abroad to volunteer benefits us in many ways and one of it would be cultural immersion. By volunteering abroad, individuals are exposed to different cultures such as western culture and french culture if you were to travel to usa or france. It helps you to get exposed to their way of life and get to know more about their customs which then leads to a deeper understanding of global and cultural diversity as well as traditions. This can be seen through a study by the american institute for foreign study, 93% of volunteers reported that their experience abroad has increased their cultural awareness and sensitivity. According to a study published in the journal of travel research, cultural immersion leads to great empathy and cross cultural understanding. for instance, spending your summer teaching english in rural community in Thailand allows volunteers to learn more about thai customs and language and the way of life. such experience then broadens perspectives and cultivate respect for diversity. Thus by taking initiative during your free time to volunteer abroad can help you gain more experiences that cannot be found in your country and allows you to experience your knowledge.

secondly, by volunteering abroad it helps you to gain values as well as to develop skills which helps you to improve yourself along the way. By volunteering abroad it can help you to develop empathy and compassion as when you are to help the underprivileged kids, in order to help them out you will have to understand what they are feeling and be in their shoes which will help you to develop emphathy. one example is that data were collected using a survey in south korea and consisted of 301 full time employee volunteerily engaged themselves in program which then mediates the relationship between cognitive empathy and effective empathy. Therefore this shows that engaging in volunteering activities works on empathy and compassion.

Firstly, volunteering can improve our social skills. It exposes us to various situations where you have to be able to speak with confidence and take initiatives. For example you might have to give a presentation or lead a project or a big group of people, these social skills can help you in this situation as we learn to adapt to different situations through volunteer work, volunteering can improve social and communication skills as it provides various opportunities to interact with different groups of people, it allows you to convey ideas effectively and practice active listening. These situations or experiences can improve communication and social skills of an individual.

Secondly, volunteering abroad can also provide us with a. sense of purpose. People who volunteered and responded to the BioLife poll stated that through volunteering about 45% of them felt an increased sense of purpose. It gives us clear reasons for what we want to do and we are willingly contributing and committing to a cause. This can help in the future when deciding on things like choosing a job or finding a new interest, and increased sense of purpose also can improve the mental wellbeing of an individual and lower the stress levels of someone. Having a increased sense of purpose can also make you feel good about how you lead your life.

Firstly, participating in volunteerism provides opportunities for individuals to better understand the challenges faced by others, leading to increased empathy and understanding. By engaging in volunteer activities, people interact with diverse communities, including those experiencing hardship or adversity. For instance, in an essay titled "Volunteering at Shelter House Community Service Learning Reflection," a teacher volunteering at a homeless shelter shares insights gained from hearing residents' stories. Through these interactions, the teacher developed a deeper sensitivity to the struggles of marginalized populations. This firsthand experience fosters a strong connection that transcends societal barriers and encourages empathy towards those in need. Additionally, witnessing the resilience of individuals facing adversity serves as inspiration. Overall, volunteerism is a transformative journey that benefits both those being served and volunteers, fostering empathy and understanding.

Secondly, engaging in volunteerism presents a valuable opportunity to enhance one's social and relationship skills. As volunteering often involves collaborating with different groups of people, allowing individuals to develop their communication and teamwork abilities. For example, "Skills Gained from Volunteering in ESN" have shown that ESNers are thrown into events and talking to students and other volunteers, where they learn how to introduce themselves and not look like a rabbit in the headlights. Moreover, in ESN, people work alongside other volunteers in their local section, board or committee to plan a local event together to join a national level communication committee and working out how to divide work equally. Therefore, volunteerism helps in developing essential social and relationship skills, fostering meaningful connections, and enriching both personal and communal experiences.

A drawback I feel contradicts the whole purpose of volunteering is that those on the receiving end will feel a sense of false happiness. This is because when volunteers travel abroad to offer services, they'll leave not long after. This will give the ones receiving the help short-term happiness and help but once these volunteers leave, it'll just make them feel used like charity-work. Many of the times what volunteers salvage, build or donate is not sustainable as what they received are not well-maintained which just adds on more work for them to do.

Some people feel 'Voluntourism' should not be encouraged as the act may seem selfish. This is due to many people believing that people volunteer for their own benefit rather than benefiting the people they are volunteering for. Most of the Volunteers volunteers for a short period of time, this makes the volunteers feel a sense of pride after volunteering, thinking they did good to the society. However, upon looking closer into the impact of their volunteering, we see that it created feelings of isolation and distrust for the locals towards the volunteers as many short term volunteers may lack cultural understanding and language skills, making communicating and forming meaningful relationships with community members difficult and when the short term volunteers leave, the locals may feel neglected due to the volunteers not making much of an impact the time they are there. Some locals may even feel like a product for the volunteers to brag about the 'good' they have done to 'help' people in need.

However, there are drawbacks of volunteering abroad. One of the drawbacks for volunteering overseas is that there is a language barrier, volunteering abroad can be challenging due to the different languages spoken. Language barriers can cause misunderstandings between one another that can lead to conflicts if one has interpreted a word or sentence wrongly. Language barriers can also make it hard to communicate with each other as the other party may not fully understand what we are trying to say. An example of this is volunteering overseas at Indonesia, Bali. One of the primary concerns that volunteers face when they arrive in Bali is the language barrier. Balinese is the local languge spoken in Bali, if a volunteer comes to teach the children English, they may find it difficult to communicate with them if they do not speak Balinese. Volunteers may also find it challenging to commute and navigate around Bali if they do not speak the local language. In conclusion, this is how language barriers can be a challenge to volunteering abroad.

While looking at the many benefits that we can get from this, there are also hard truths to why people volunteer overseas, considering some of them acts of selfishness.

The thought that enters my head when it comes to volunteering in general is, when will we ever volunteer again? Thinking of it,volunteering overseas requires money, resources, time and initiative. But how many times will we travel back and forth to provide aid to others. Will we be willing to make sacrifices to our daily lives, spend money and take our time to help those in need? That's the hard truth behind volunteering overseas.Whether we would be willing make changes to our personal lives for the impersonation of being good-hearted.

Leaving those in hope that they will see us again, provide necessities and aid just to touch their lives for a day or so.Posting and posing with them with smiles that they think will last forever when in reality, they only stay when we are with them. So yes, we can benefit ourselves and maybe benefit their lives, but how long will it last? When will they start needing our help again? Is it false hope that they get from all our volunteer work.

However there are also some drawbacks on volunteering overseas and a great example would be the issue of communication between the locals and volunteers. With each country having its own language and cultures and dialects there is bound to have problems of communication with the locals. For example, Maggi Doyne who is a American philanthropist that went volunteering in Nepal. As she went to Nepal, she did not know and Nepali and could not gain the trust of the people which had hindered her progress of her volunteering work. This shows that without being able to to speak the native language of the locals. There might be difficulties in communications. And it can also hinder the progress of actually helping the locals and really being able to work with them until the volunteer has learned the basics of the language.

However, there are drawbacks to voluntourism. Voluntourism is known as 'saving locals' or 'contributing to the community'. Though it is true to a certain extent but the volunteering work may only be beneficial to the volunteers' end. When volunteering overseas, one is expected to help the community in ways like building a common space for the residents, provide medical care and many more but these volunteering work is usually within the span of a few months. Usually after volunteering, the volunteers reflect upon mainly themselves and not the community or villagers. Additionally, volunteering might give one a sense of accomplishment or act as a form of feel-good work but whether the work done has really benefited the community may differ. Volunteering overseas may also benefit the volunteers because of how they can travel to different parts of the world and explore. Thus, voluntourism may only be beneficial on the volunteers' end

Despite these benefits, there are also drawbacks of travelling overseas that are concerning. Firstly, volunteering abroad may lead to ethical concerns regarding the impact of volunteer work. Volunteers may unintentionally put out other cultural activities which may affect the culture and practices of that country. This may lead to misunderstanding among the locals and tourists. Without proper cultural context and sensitivity, this is highly likely to occur. For instance, a group of students from a Western country visited a rural village in Cambodia to build a school for the local community. Without considering their traditional building practices, they used materials that are unfamiliar and constructed a building that sharply contrasts with the natural surroundings. This led the locals to feel disconnected from their local culture and environment. Furthermore, the volunteers unintentionally encourage Western influence and weaken the local cultural identity of the community. This affected their culture and practices. Therefore, volunteering abroad may lead to ethical concerns.

Even though volunteering has its own pros, it also comes together with its cons. when we talk about volunteering its usually done in your free time where you take the initiative and sign yourself up to volunteer. when you volunteer, you will have to consider a few factors such as your commitment level. Therefore here is where the problem lies. Many would volunteer as its a good deed but fail to do their part of the homework, which is to check their schedule and confirm that they can be commitment to this sector of volunteerism that they have chosen. In this case, volunteering abroad may sound extremely fun but unlike any other regular 'holiday' a volunteering journey requires commitment and it is expected that you will stick to it. Especially because it's overseas and its for a longer period of time. The time you commit is immensely valuable as it determines how effectively you are going to create an impact. For example, if you were to choose a project for 3 weeks and feel like backing out after a week, you would not only disrupt the schedule that has been set for you but also disappoint the people of your host community. Not only that, due to the last minute request, they may not be able to find a substitute to replace you which would then disrupt the plan. According to data from international volunteer programs association, the average duration of volunteer abroad programs is around 2 to 12 weeks, with some programs lasting for a year. For many people, committing to such extended periods awat from home cab be daunting and may require careful planning and consideration. Therefore in summary commitment is a crucial aspect of volunteering abroad, and can be a potential downside due to time involved

It may create issue with commuicating with others and knowing more information for a specific location or teaching them. An example of this could be the english teacher who went to India to teach the students, as she was having difficulties communicating with them and getting to know them as there is a language barrier. This may eventually become a big problem when you are volunteering overseas as you would need to gather information before helping them out. Thus having languange barrier may be a drawback of volunteering abroad.

However, volunteerism also brings drawbacks such as emotional tiring. People who engage in volunteerism are often those who hope to make a positive difference to society, and they are usually more emotionally attached to the people or animals they serve, they may find themselves experiencing a range of emotions, including attachment, empathy, and sometimes even distress. But with this kind of characteristic, they breakdown easily or disappoint when they perceive that their efforts are not yielding the positive impact they had hoped for. For example, A volunteer at an animal rescue shelter invests significant time and energy into caring for abandoned and neglected animals. Despite their efforts to find loving homes for the animals, some remain unadopted for long period of time. The volunteer feels saddened by the animals' continued plight and self-questioning whether their work is truly making a difference in the animals' lives. Overall, while volunteering can be deeply rewarding and fulfilling, it also comes with its share of emotional challenges.

On the contrary, Volunteering abroad does come with drawbacks too, one of which is rise of ethical concerns. When a person travels abroad to volunteer, and gain unique experience, they may not be aware yet of the culture, practices and beliefs of the area. These can result them to offending the locals unintentionally, and also being not accepted in the community, which can lead to the rise of ethical concerns. Additionally, these concerns can be vice versa, especially when a foreigner form a developed country is travelling to a underdeveloped country. These happens because of the different views of different people. Some actions may seem right to some people, however the same actions may also be an offend to others. These actions can also hurt some peoples moral, which may lead to the rise of ethical concerns in volunteering abroad. On an article by World Vision Canada, they says that " Voluntourism can have many negative effects, but perhaps the worst cases involve the exploitation of children.".

C: Although volunteering is an act of service to humanity, there are still drawbacks of volunteering overseas. Volunteering often comes with significant financial costs, especially volunteering abroad. Expanses for travel, accommodation and program fees are needed. Travelling to another country can be expensive due to transportation costs like airfare and local transportation. Especially in underdeveloped areas where there is a lack of transportation infrastructure, the price for a Grab taxi may cost a lot more. Accommodation expenses can vary depending on the location and the level of comfort one desires. However, most organisations would charge program fees to cover for the cost of transportation, training and resources. This financial barriers can be a troublesome and prevent proactive individuals from participating in volunteering programs, which can limit the diversity of perspectives and experience of individuals

However, on the other hand, there may be some drawbacks when volunteering abroad as it might pose some health risks both for volunteers themselves and the community that they visits. Volunteers travels to regions where infectious diseases may be prevalent as places that volunteers volunteer at might face the lack of proper medical services, thus increasing the risk of getting seriously ill. They might also face the lack of access to clean water and sanitation facilities that will exacerbate these risks. In 2018, there were a group of American students who traveled to Uganda for a voluntourism trip, unfortunately they were affected by a measles outbreak. The lack of vaccination among some members of the group, combined with close contact with local communities, facilitated the spread of the disease. Thus, there may also be a downside of volunteering abroad.

While volunteering abroad provides a unique opportunity for individuals to engage in meaningful cultural exchange and profoundly broadens the perspectives of those who choose to embark on such journeys, it also brings about ethical concerns which need to be addressed. One significant concern is the potential for volunteers to inadvertently perpetuate harmful stereotypes or reinforce unequal power dynamics.

For example, in volunteer programs focused on international development, volunteers from more economically privileged backgrounds may unknowingly reinforce a narrative of Western superiority or create dependency among local communities by implementing short-term solutions without considering long-term sustainability. When communities become reliant on short-term volunteer assistance for essential services or infrastructure development, it can hinder their long-term capacity-building efforts and undermine local autonomy For instance,, a voluntourism project that provides free medical care in a rural village may inadvertently discourage the development of a sustainable healthcare system by perpetuating the notion that healthcare should be provided for free by foreign volunteers rather than being the responsibility of the government or local institutions.

Another significant concern is the potential for voluntourism to prioritize the desires and experiences of volunteers over the actual needs of the communities they visit. This can result in the commodification of poverty and the exploitation of vulnerable populations for the benefit of volunteers seeking a short-term, feel-good experience. As a case in point, orphanage tourism epitomizes how voluntourism often prioritizes volunteers' desires over communities' true needs. In some cases, "orphanages for profit" exploit vulnerable children to attract volunteers and donations. Volunteers inadvertently perpetuate this exploitation by supporting such institutions, exacerbating emotional harm and dependency. This underscores the ethical concerns of voluntourism, as it commodifies poverty and exploits vulnerable populations for volunteers' short-lived satisfaction.

Firstly, volunteering assist the less fortunate and allows them to live an easier life. Many volunteer programs aim to ease the stress of living of the financially disadvantaged by creating fundraisers or donation drives. They then gather volunteers to distribute the necessities that were received through the donations and fundraisers to the less fortunate. The reason for the startup of the non-profit organisations was out of empathy and concern for the needy by the philanthropists. The situation of other less privileged humans inspired them to try to make a change in their lives. For instance, Feeding America is a non-profitable nationwide network of food banks and food distribution centers that works to alleviate hunger and food insecurity in the United States. They collaborate with food manufacturers, retailers, and donors to collect and distribute large quantities of food to food banks and pantries across the country. Overall, Feeding America has greatly reduced the issue of food insecurity in America with its charitable cause. This ties in with my point that volunteering aids the living of those in need which could not have been done without the altruism and the selflessness of both the donators and the volunteers.

Secondly, i would like to bring up the point that the benefits of the volunteer programs go both ways. To elaborate, the volunteers themselves are able to gain from the experience of helping the less fortunate. Their philanthropic act serves a meaningful purpose in both theirs’ and those who are in need.It also may also give one a sense of purpose and fulfillment through their altruistic act by improving others’ lives. Furthermore, by proffering their help, it allows them to learn a variety of skills and also gain knowledge.Such an organization that provides these benefits is Habitat for Humanity.Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity not only assist in building and repairing homes for families in need but also have the opportunity to learn construction skills such as carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work. Habitat provides training and supervision on-site, allowing volunteers to gain valuable hands-on experience while making a tangible impact on addressing housing issues. This brings back to my point that through these volunteering opportunities, volunteers learn a variety of skills and knowledge.

However, there are a few drawbacks to volunteering abroad. One drawback is short term focus. Many volunteer programs only last for a week or a month at most, while this can provide valuable experiences for volunteers and the people we volunteered for, but this can only last for this short period which would not change the long-term effect of the people’s life. One example can be volunteering in a kindergarten to take care of the children there, it might be a great experience for them, but it is only one or two days of their life which will not change anything about the children’s or the teacher’s everyday life.

While it broadens your perspective on life and how you see things, and it has an impact on the lives of others, it may benefit you more than others. This is why we need to be sensitive and understand that what we mean to do or say may not come across correctly. This is because, while it may appear to be a kind gesture, the recipient may feel ridiculed or used as if they are part of charity work, which can give them a false feeling of satisfaction in the short term.

To recapitulate, while volunteering abroad may gain you benefits like offering opportunities for cultural understanding and personal development by pushing volunteers beyond their comfort zones, it also raises ethical concerns about the potential negative impact on local economies from volunteer efforts. Does the benefits outweigh the drawbacks of volunteering abroad? Well, some may agree while some others might disagree. However, it is important to consider not only the benefits of volunteering abroad but the drawbacks too. It will help you be aware of what kind of problems can possibly caused so that you can be prepared to face any challenges that you may come across. Furthermore, it can minimise any kind of issues caused by you that may affect the locals or the country.

In summary, Volunteering overseas may bring us new roads and opportunities in our lives by expanding our portfolio positively , and also being able to understand the perspective of being in the underpriviledged shoes, but the sad truth is that we do not consider it a full time thing . We do it because it makes us feel good about ourselves and only volunteer again if we 'feel like it'. Leaving those in hope that we would come back and pay them a visit again with more stuff to touch their lives. But when will be the next time we come back with food , toys , cheques , blankets , and aid for them ? Hence we should all play a part to contribute to helping those in need . Simple things like donating our used toys and clothes instead of throwing them away or giving away food that we may not like to those who would appreciate it better. All that is needed is a simple act of kindness that we are consistent with.

In conclusion, there are advantage and disadvantages of volunteering abroad. There will be supporters who argue that volunteering abroad will improve your cultural knowledge serving as a platform for people to gain new work experience. Yet, there may be critics who argue that voluntourism is a platform for self improvement, and not for the wellbeing of others and that there may be language barriers which might prevent them from benefitting from voluntourism. If we want to build a world a better place for everyone to live in then we must not only think about ourselves and we must begin helping in small ways . As the saying goes no act of kindness is to small .

Volunteering abroad helps to expose ourselves to new environments as well as character developement . All of these benefits could be outweighed by legitimate issues like the resources and expenses needed to facilitate these programmes or the controversy that may arise from these one day programmes . All in all , with a growing trend for the act of volunteerism , it is becoming a bottom line that more of such opportunites be it local or overseas should be available to the public. However there are always the pros and cons and therefore volunteering abroad will need a high amount of commitment level that some of us are not able to provide. Moreover many of us tend to think that volunteering often brings about benefits to other but fail to realise that we gain more benefits than the people we are helping. This all serves as an experience for those who are volunteering abroad. However, some people may think otherwise, Volunteering aboard may also be a form of cover-up for organisations which are doing illegal/ inappropriate businesses, which rises ethical concerns. Additionally, many also think that volunteering abroad too often may result in the locals in need to become too dependant on volunteering organisations to cover for a living. I think that these concerns can be overcomed, if we were to be more careful and aware about the places and organisation we volunteer for, we would definitely be able to positive volunteer for abroad.

To end off, volunteering is like a deadly double edged sword. On one hand it helps with learning about others and their cultures so volunteers are able to be more culturally diverse. Furthermore, the locals community would benefit as it through these efforts the situation of the environment in their country would improve and there would be people that would maintain the environment once in a while. However, with these benefits there are also drawbacks such as the difficulty of communication with the locals causing there to be a lost in trust and also hinder the volunteer work that is supposed to help them. Moreover, volunteering brings people to countries that are less developed which could cause harm to the volunteers such as being infected with sicknesses, or hurt while walking in the unpaved areas of the village or town. And could even cause emotional harm to some as they may feel homesick being away from home and in a location that does not have any of the basic amenities that their country has. But through this experience we may want to volunteer again but is it really the best? Is it worth it? End up the decision is yours to choose if you want or do not want to volunteer overseas again.

On one end, volunteers are able to learn new morals and get insights of a new way perspective of life. And they can also learn culture from another end of the world, and expose themselves on how different we are from one another. on the other end of the spectrum, voluntourism only benefits the volunteers that made them seem selfish and uncaring as it is it benefits more of yourself rather than others. And as volunteers, am i going to help them forever? It is a one time change but is it a long-term change to the community? With all this being said, how are we going to attack these problems. One way is to make the project long-term like maintaining and showing up to volunteer for about a month or half year. But, it brings a lost to a company and volunteers need their personal time as well. If we cannot tackle the problem then, let's question ourselves. Should we just volunteer at your local country rather than just do voluntourism?

Volunteering organizations typically prioritize the safety and well-being of their volunteers, so it's rare for a reputable organization to put volunteers at risk of illness. However, in some cases, volunteering in certain environments or situations might expose individuals to health hazards.Volunteering in disease-prone areas may expose volunteers to infectious diseases prevalent in the region. For example, volunteers may encounter diseases like malaria, dengue fever, cholera, or other contagious illnesses depending on the location and local health conditions. Thus there are drawbacks of volunteering abroad.

Though the benefits of volunteering are reciprocated back to the volunteers. Some philosophies may argue that it benefits the volunteers themselves more than the target audience that they volunteered to help for. Such an example would be a smaller scale food donation drive as the impact that it makes on their targetted group in need is quite minute. It may serve more of a purpose for the volunteers as they will feel a sense of fulfillment after completing the program without knowing that their aid didnt make much of a noticeable difference in the life of financially deprived. instead, the impact on the group volunteer is only short-lived and temporary. A study that supports my argument is Volunteer Tourism: A Global Analysis. It speaks on how some volunteer tourism programs may prioritize the experiences and desires of volunteers over the needs of local communities, potentially leading to unequal power dynamics and limited long-term benefits for the host communities. This sums up my point on how volunteering may provide more of a benefit for the volunteers then the community being volunteered for.

Imagine the amount of possibilities it can bring about for us like helping with our daily tasks or even in schools for us students. So with this technological break through, it may be beneficial but in my opinion it is a double edged sword. As on one hand, AI is able to help us students find information for our learning. Furthermore, AI is able to give back specialised feedback towards each person. However, on the other hand, AI an bring about false information or not up to date information. Moreover, AI could cause students to over rely on AI.

But how good is Artificial Intelligence really? On the one hand, Artificial Intelligence such as Chatgpt or Claude 9 can help increase efficiency by wasting less time, and, it can also provide targeted feedback and reduce human errors. On the other hand, Artificial Intelligence, because it is mainly programmed, lacks creativity and authenticity as humans do, and also, Artificial Intelligence can be misused in many ways which can in turn reverse the effects of learning in the first place.

It is used in industries, schools and so much more. It can provide information with a single click of a button and you can even ask AI to generate a code for robots of you ask for it. Plus, students have been using AI for answers to math questions, provide a whole essay. It seems very versatile but there are cons of using AI especially in school.

To summarise, volunteering provides people of lower socioeconomic status with the crucial help they require and alleviates some of the stress of living on them. Meanwhile, it also helps the volunteers acquire knowledge and skills that can even be applied daily. However, on the flip side, there are also drawbacks to volunteering. Firstly, some volunteer programs do reap more benefits for volunteers than the group volunteered for. This is due to the organisation focusing on the experience of the volunteers more than the actual impact made on the group volunteered. Another issue is some volunteer programs require more commitment which may not be stated in their advertisement or website. This may lead to clashes between volunteers’ personal commitments and the volunteer program causing problems for the volunteers. In a nutshell, there are drawbacks to volunteering and that volunteering shouldn’t be seen as all sunshine and rainbows.

AI a digital software that students often use in education has immensely increased over the past few years , with individual personalised learning devices , students are more open to finding ways to answer their questions without having to ask the teacher directly. While AI is able to impact some students positively in their learning , they also negatively impact them in terms of their willingness to learn actively in school.

AI accelerates learning allowing students to ask thoughtful questions as and when , but this also prevents them from the thinking process that majority of students go through before resulting to asking or searching for solutions. Some look to AI as a source to complete one's work without having to put in effort and a easy escape to completing their workload so that they have more time for their leisure. Apart from that , students look up to AI for better ideas and solutions to improve their learning. Speaking from personal experiences I too use AI to improve my ideas for essays. So it is understandable for students to use AI to speed up their thinking process. But on the other hand, it results to students looking up to AI to cheat and find a easy way out.

AI has become a common topic in education in the 21st century. Artificial Intelligence is the science of programming a machine to have human abilities and behaviour. It is also capable of having human intelligence, it can do things that we consider "smart". However, how can something so "smart" be able to be used in education? Well on one hand, AI can allow easier access to educational knowledge, it allows students and children to learn according to their own pace and it provide students with a balanced view of different topics in the education systems. However on the other hand, students may develop the habit of being over reliant on the use of AI after a long period of time. AI may also hinder students social skills, if they constantly used AI in education.

Artificial Intelligence are machines that are programmed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, like solving problems, recognising speech and making decisions. On the one hand, Artificial Intelligence imbedded into education provides a personalised learning experience that can cater to students' needs and its accessibility provides students with learning materials anytime, anywhere. However, on the other hand, Artificial Intelligence might displace some traditional education roles and reduce the number of roles available, and also too much use of Artificial Intelligence may lead to over-reliance on it

Have you ever wondered how Artificial Intelligence(AI) is being used in our education system? But, what is AI exactly? AI refers to robotic machines that mimic human intelligence processes. They are designed to perform specific tasks based on processing data and recognising patterns. In this way, they are capable of having skills such as learning, reasoning, problem solving, perception and making decisions. With these useful aspects, AI can play a key role in our education system such as assisting students with their learning by acting as a personalised tutor and having the ability to give feedback on assignments by analysing data. Nevertheless, there are flaws that come with the use of the AI system that include students highly relying on AI for their assignments and even replacing the positions of teachers.
