Caliban thought what he was doing was justifiable because he, "showed thee all the qualities o’ th’ isle / The fresh springs, brine pits, barren place and fertile" (Shakespeare 1.2.403-405).

Perspective: Safeguarding a positive perspective on a dilemma is good, however, there must be some cynicism to keep goals realistic even at the cost of emotions.

In this scene, Shakespeare uses the characters Antonio, Sebastian, and Gonzalo to exemplify how different mindsets in the same situation determine how people go from that point on. Gonzalo is trying to be positive with lines such as, "Can speak like us. Then wisely, good sir, weight / Our sorrow with our comfort" instead of the negative and joking mindset Sebastian and Antonio have (Shakespeare 2.1.8-9). While this is coming from the good of Gonzalo's heart it also needs to be taken with a grain of salt so they can prepare for the island appropriately.

At what point does a positive mindset become more harmful because of the unrealistic goals that will eventually let one down?

Power and Knowledge Theme: If the acquisition of knowledge equals greater power, the power that comes from gaining knowledge can influence the intent of the one learning.

In Act 3 it shows the readers how much power can be obtained when you know, even if the knowledge is used for evil. This is seen through characters, but mainly focusing on Prospero. Conversing between the characters, Shakespeare conveys the theme through lines such as, "At nothing can be more. I'll to my book / For yet ere suppertime must I perform" (Shakespeare 3.1.113-114). This shows that Prospero's power comes from his books and with prior knowledge knowing that he used his power to strand other people on the island out of revenge. This can also be seen when Trinculo, Stephano, and Caliban plot to murder Prospero by weakening him before by taking away his books and, therefore his power.

Should people obtain knowledge so they would be more qualified of a leader to others even at the cost of the morality blurring?
