Vinny is a normal kid(Something Else).he is afraid of jumping off the cliff. Like most kids he has a fear of heights.One piece of evidence is,"His hands shook as if he were freezing. He wondered, had the dead boy felt like this way."This shows that he is scared the fact that he was shaking shows his fear.Another piece of evidence is,"Don't do it. Walk back down. In my opinion Vinny is a hero. One example that proves why I think can be found on paragraph 128 because it states "But deep inside where the peace was,where his mind wasn't he would not jump.He would walk back down."This shows that while his 'Friends' is pressuring him to jump he suddenly felt calm and at peace and is suddenly telling himself to not jump.Another example can be found din paragraphs 131-132 because it states "After a long pause he spit out the leaf and rubbed the cross into a blur.They walked out of the ravine in silence,Starlene,Joe boy,and Mo far ahead of him.They hadn't said a word since he'd come off the trail."This shows that Vinny decided to not jump and came down the trail which caused his 'Friends' to avoid him and not talk to him because they were upset that he didn't jump.

I believe Vinny has Independence. Because he does not let his peers pressure him into doing things he dosen't want to do. Vinny goes up, but dosen't jump because he is not letting the fact that his friends would get annoyed if he didn't affect whether or not he jumped. For instance the text states "Joe-Boy, Starlene, and Mo were now almost down the road. Vinny breathed deeply, and looked up and out over the island." My opinion on Vinny is that he is a heroic person because he doesn't like seeing people getting in risky situations with life or death because for the risk of his friends he tells them to stop since the rumors of death in the ravine, he was dragged along by Starlene and Joe Boy and he was scared since there was rumors of a teenager who drowned. As in the text it says "Vinny's stomach tingled just watching her." As another one is "she has no fear, Vinny thought, no fear at all. please please please, starlene. I don't want to see you die." this shows he has morals for his bullies even though he was getting pressured by Joe Boy and starlene and later on he talks to himself saying "please please, mo not you too" but he doesn't jump but he just wants to be safe and secure with his friends while they walked away not knowing he was the one most smart and secured one.

Vinny is a people pleaser. He agrees with Joe Boy to go to the ravine even when he does not want to just because he wants his image in his friend's mind to be good. For example, the text says, "Vinny mashed his lips. He was so weak. Couldn't even say no." This indicates that Vinny does not have the resolve to say no so even though he agrees anyway when he does not want to. This is because he does not want his friends to see him as weak and him being not brave, showing how he is a people pleaser as he just tries to make them happy with him. Vinny is a coward. From the start, Vinny never wanted to come here, it was Evident he was a coward and did not want to go to the ravine and jump. He was thinking it was sketching and wanting to go back already before they got somewhere in the ravine. Also, he lies about doing the jump and trys to get away from it being a coward. For example, in the text, it states on page 243 paragraphs 82-83. " Vinny got up and hiked around the edge of the pond, walking in the muddy shallows, looking at a school of small brown-backed fish near a ginger patch. Maybe they'd forgot about him." This shows that Vinny is trying to get away from the jump he said he was going to do. Showing he's a coward because he is trying to make them forgetting about him to do the jump that he was suppose to do but didn't do. Also in the text, it says at page 246 paragraph 132. In my opinion, Vinny is a strong person. Vinny didn't do anything positive that improved the events of the story nor did anything that indicates he has a lack of courage, but he did stay resilient and ignored his friends thoughts. According to the text, paragraph 121 " You can, you can, you can. Walk back down." This makes it evident that Vinny has courage in him, since he found the courage to walk back down even if it will disappoint his friends which opposes the idea that he is cowardly and shows he is strong from finding the courage to deny something. I see Vinny as a coward because the entire story shows him as scared and gullible and I know this because in the text it states,"Vinny decided he'd better believe in the legend. This is RIGHT after Joe Boy tells him a legend about the boy who drowned and he believed it, making him very manipulative and weak. Vinny is a coward in my opinion. Vinny is hesitant and fearful after seeing all his friends jumping into the ravine, but tells Starlene that he is going to jump into the ravine. He also break his mom's promise of "never going anywhere near the ravine" And also could say bad things about his friends and family. In the text it says "Yeah, stupid, but she thinks it's haunted." This detail shows that Vinny can backbiting anyone, even though his mom is worrying about his safety. Another detail is "Joe Boy's an idiot. sure I'm going to jump." I think Vinny is a coward, but still has some semblance of dignity. Yes, he's shown to have many moments of fear and anxiety in the text, but him having some self-respect is evident in the ending of the story. In paragraphs 24 to 26, it says: "Now he didn’t know what he believed.

This quote pulled from the text shows just how much of a coward Vinny can be. See, to have self-respect, you need to have faith in your beliefs. That part is especially important, because we see the internal conflict he's enduring regarding the goddess. If he constantly doubts his beliefs and himself, what's the point of even believing in anything at all? Then in the text from paragraphs 131 to 132, it also states: "After a long pause he spit the leaf out and rubbed the cross to a blur. They walked out of the ravine in silence, Starlene, Joe-Boy, and Mo far ahead of him. They hadn’t said a word since he’d come down off the trail. He knew what they were thinking. He knew, he knew, he knew." This indicates he in fact didn't jump at all, but instead did what he wanted to do--similar what Mo frequently does. This shows a great heap of self respect, showing us that even despite his fears, he can still have some sort of pride and confidence in his decisions. With all factors considered, Vinny is very much a coward. But he definitely shows enough potential to grow and flourish into someone who could one day have heroic qualities and learn to set boundaries with the truly vile people that he calls 'friends'.

I think Vinny is more of an in-between character because he's not really a coward or a hero, since he didn't do anything that's heroic, he was just facing his fears and he's also not a coward since at the end he did face his fear of confronting his friends and the chance of being made fun at. This piece of evidence shows the moment that Vinny realized that he will face his fear and most people will probably call it heroic but I disagree since he was just realizing that he will face his fear like any other kid and that's something normal, not really heroic. In my opinion Vinny is a coward because Joe-Boy,Starlene, and even Mo had jumped and was telling him to jump too. But Vinny didn't jump since he was afraid of heights. If he jumped,then he would have overcome his fear, but he didn't. He didn't because a small voice in his mind kept telling him not too. That voice stopped him from overcoming his fear.A text says " but deep inside, where the peace was, where his mind wasn't ,he would not jump. He would walk back down. " This text means that inside his mind, he didn't want to jump even though his friends kept telling him too ( peer pressure ) , and also this showed how that voice stopped Vinny from overcoming his fear. He could have easily tune out the voice and jump but he didn't. Another text says " He had not made up his mind about jumping. But something else inside him had " This text shows how a voice inside of Vinny prevented him from overcoming his fear ( as said before ) , this stopped him from jumping. Vinny is just a normal person. Despite the fact that he overcame the fear of being peer pressured, he is just a normal human being since some people might've also overcame similar fears. In addition, somebody that overcame a typical fear shouldn't or wouldn't be considered a hero, nor a bully. Furthermore, he is scared to jump, which is very typical, since a rumor says a boy died there. According to the text, it stated. " 'Joe-Boy says you're afraid to jump. I didn't believe him. He's wrong, right?'...'Joe-Boy's an idiot. Sure I'm going to jump.' ...'But deep inside, where the peace was, where his mind wasn't, he would not jump.' " Even though the quotes are indicating that Vinny isn't afraid to get peered pressured anymore, it really doesn't show that he is somewhat a hero since overcoming a certain fear might be typical. I think Vinny is a caring person because it evidently shows how much he cares about Starlene when she jumped, he even found the opportunity to cease peace in him.

This quote shows how Vinny cares about Starlene but not only that but he's worried that something bad could happen for doing dangerous stunts like putting a cross on her shirt he was also praying for her which made him worry about her and feel very nervous about her. that can make feelings which could be very strong and indicates that he is thoughtful about people.

In addition it states,"But he prayed it wouldn't leave him now, prayed it wouldn't go away, would never go away, because on there, in that place where the peace was, it didn't matter what they thought." From the start Vinny never wanted to go to the Ravine but his friends convinced him to go into the Ravine. And he lies so he doesn't need to jump even though all his friends have jumped already and he thinks his friends would make fun of him for not jumping. No choice" This indicates that Vinny thinks he might get made fun of if he said his parents won't like it if he went in the Ravine and jumping into the 15 foot ledge.
