As the carnival arrives for the very first time, in the middle of the night, the boys' immediate reaction is that of fear and terror. As the carnival's employees establish their tents and stands, both Jim and Will acknowledge that it's appearance resembles that of dark, stormy, clouds. Considering the lightning salesman's warnings given to Jim near the beginning of the novel, regarding an oncoming storm, it would be safe to assume that the supposed "storm" is actually the carnival.

The Carousels introduction in the story acts as a symbol for temptation for the kids and the people in the town. The Carousel grants the rider the ability to grow older or become younger. This is the ultimate power since it essentially grants the rider eternal life being able to become younger with just one ride. This temptation that the Carousel emits attracts the attention of Jim who saw his future in the Carousel. Jim becomes fully absorbed by this power and his entire focus shifts dramatically to being able to ride the Carousel. Jim tries to move on forward without Will and give into his temptation. This results in when Jim finally gives into the temptation and tries to ride the Carousel. Will was able to stop Jim at the last second and the kids are shown the consequences of giving into their temptations, as they see that Mr. Cooger is killed due to both of their acts of selfishness.

This encounter starts off the novel and with the forwarding events proving to be connected to the lightning rod and the "storm." The "storm" is later connected to the circus rather than a storm pertaining to the weather. The "storm" is the unnatural events and the commotion the Carnival brings to the town. The town was previously quiet and regular however with the arrival of the Carnival it became disrupted and chaotic. Somehow Jim would be protected from this storm by that lightning rod that was given to him.

With the effects of the carnival hitting closer to their home town, now more than ever have they been motivated to help and rid their precious town of the insanity that is the circus.

Through Jim giving into the temptations from the carnival he indirectly caused the death of Mr. Cooger because of Will. This death rattled the boys to the core and showed the consequences of the boy's actions. This also started the carnival's hunt for the boys to get revenge. The dead body of Mr. Cooger is then used by the carnival for their newest act Mr. Electrico. This act involves the use of reviving Mr. Cooger's dead body by striking him with electricity. This act by the Carnival puts into clear view the evil powers the Carnival possesses by being able to bring people back from the dead. However while Mr. Cooger was brought back from the dead he was crippled and could barely muster out any words. This works to further cement the Carnival being a symbol for evil while also showing that the Carnival is not omnipotent and has limits to it's power.

Jim and Will hide from the rest of the Carnival because they are being hunted. When they discover Miss.

At this point this is when the boys truly start to fear the carnival. Before when the carnival first arrived Jim more than Will had been investigating as if it was just a part of another one of their adventure books. Slowly they do eventually discover the true risk of the carnival and its dangers. They don't know exactly what has been going on with it and why it is even stopped in their town. When Mrs. Foley gets transformed they want to help bring her back to her own body and the carnival doesn't want the boys to interfere. This is when the boys go into hiding and start fearing the carnival instead of taking it as a lighter situation than what it actually is.

Just having returned home, both Jim and Will are residing in their respective rooms when both boys begin to suspect something nearing their homes. After the two peer out of their windows, they realize that the Dust-Witch, one of the many performers at the carnival, is traveling towards them in a hot air balloon. Jim succesfully escapes to Will's house just as the Witch begins to apply a silver liquid to the roof of Jim's home. The two recognize that this is so the carnival could easily track the location of the boy's homes, regardless of whether it's night or day, whenever they please. After Jim and Will wash away the liquid, the Witch begins to flee, leading Will to pursue it in hopes of striking the balloon down. Will eventually reaches the Witch, popping the balloon. This signifies a great moment of change within Will's persona, as he has proven his true capabilities and bravery.

They come to the conclusion that Mr. Dark who is the lead at this affair has been using the carousel's powers and is in actuality over 1000 years old. Among other things about the carousel that frighten them they get a real conversation with Will's dad. This is very eye opening on who Charles Halloway is as a character and how he is of help to the final solution to the story.

When Mr. Dark locates and captures both Jim and Will, he actively attempts to play to their greatest fears. He makes sure that the two see Will's father injured, and mocked their utter anguish. This showcases Mr. Dark's sadistic personality as well as his lack of sincerity in how he views the lives of others. Once the Witch enters the scene, she "stitches" the eyes, ears, and mouths of the boys shut, repeating a phrase that frequently mentions darning-needle dragonflies. In folklore the darning-needle dragonfly is said to have been able to erase the senses of those who perform evil. This indirectly furthers the old belief that is present within the book of not speaking, hearing, or seeing evil.

He volunteers to fire the rifle at the bullet catch trick show in an effort to strike Mr. Dark and the others by surprise. Despite his injury, he presses onwards. During the event, Charles Halloway both outwits and outmatches Mr. Dark's plans and trickery, effectively slaying the Dust-Witch and throwing the carnival into complete disarray. Mr. Halloway's actions reflects one of the core themes from within the text, which is the idea that to understand the unknown is to be able to confront it head-on.

Saving Jim

This marks the last major pivotal point in Will's journey. It puts on perfect display the good in Will and his dad's hearts by going back to save Jim even if it means putting themselves in danger. When they find Jim it's him giving into his temptations again and trying to get a ride on the carousel. Through Will's actions to try to stop him and telling Jim that he needs him, it finally breaks through to Jim that he's wanted and it doesn't matter if he's older to be accepted. This final action shows that even in your darkest times all you good is help to guide you back onto the right track. Even with Will's help Jim is still left mortally wounded and in a state that Will thinks that he is dead. The Carnival being a representation of evil feeds off of bad emotions Will and his father combat this by channeling all of their positive emotions. They jump up and start singing and having a great time this breaks the Carnival's hold of Jim and brings him back into the light. This shows the overarching theme of the story of good always wins over evil.
