“Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all”. As soon as Nick arrives he made an attempt to find his host but “the two or three people of whom I asked his whereabouts stared at me in such an amazed way"

This shows that Gatsby doesn't really participate at his own party. He also admit it himself “I´m afraid I´m not a very good host”

There are a lot of rumors about Gatsby:
“Somebody told me they thought he killed a man once”, “it's more that he was a German spy during the war”, “oh no said the first girl, it couldn't be that, because he was in the American army during the war”

These quotes shows a bit about Gatsby's background, but it might be rumors, because people have been told the information from others.

Gatsby actually served in the war together with Nick Carraway:

“‘Your face is familiar,’ he said politely. ‘Weren’t you in the First Division during the war?’
‘Why, yes. I was in the Twenty-eighth Infantry.’
‘I was in the Sixteenth until June nineteen-eighteen. I knew I’d seen you somewhere before.’”

This tells us that Nick and Gatsby have actually met before.

This quote hints toward the fact that Gatsby might be something more than what meets the eye.
