Invasive Species- Nile Monitor

Description: The large lizard can grow up to seven feet in length with an average of five feet. They weigh up to 15 pounds. They have an olive green to black skin with yellow stripes next to the head and tail. They often jump in the water to flee from predators.

Native Range: The lizards are usually found in Nile River delta and the Sub-Saharan (map shown).

Arrival in Florida: Many people own these reptiles as exotic pet and when they can no longer provide large quantities of food and shelter, they decide to release them into the wild. They are now found in Palm Beach, Miami-Dade, and Lee.

Diet: The Nile Monitor's diet consists of crickets, mealworms, rodents, and eggs. In the Everglades many lizards find an alligator nest, quietly wait for an opportunity, eat the eggs, and continue the process. The Nile monitors also feed on birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Impact: The diet of the Nile monitors cause issues for the other wildlife in the Everglades. Their destruction of nests filled with alligator or bird eggs decreases their population. The lizards feed on endangered species and anything they can over power.

Ecological Footprint

An ecological footprint is a persons effect on the community around you and how many resources are required in your lifestyle. Your footprint is what you leave behind and your effect. I have a high footprint requiring 6.1 plants to sustain my lifestyle. I currently eat a lot of processed food and meats along with a busy household that uses an excessive amount of electricity. Some simple ways to reduce my footprint is driving with other people and increasing my recycling. I live in the United States therefore my services footprint is very high because of the many resources like roads, restaurants, and the government that is provided to us. If everyone on the planet lived like America, our ecological footprint would kill the Earth.

Environment Worldview- Ecocentric

"Nature is not a place to visit. It is a home" -Gary Snyder
An ecocentric worldview revolves around the ecosystem and the belief that the world exists for all species, not just humans. These people agree with economic growth that helps sustain the Earth and disagree with anything that degrades the Earth. They believe that our resources are limited and need to be preserved. Nature does not need humans to control them, but we need to work with nature to preserve the Earth. The quote by Gary Snyder explains that nature is home to many animals. Humans can not come into nature's home and try to rule over it; nature exists for all species. Our generation has the power to change the world by preserving nature. In this day and age, the Earth is deteriorating and we can raise awareness and motivate people to see that Earth does not need humans running the world. Throughout this trip, I have learned the impact that one small action effects. For example, if you touch any coral in the reef it will take a year to replenish it to its original state. One action that people take effect the world in a larger scale that i thought. I now understand that we need to preserve nature.

The crickets, raccoon, and fish are considered primary consumers. The secondary consumers are the turtles, great blue heron, and frog.
Safe Drinking Water Act

The Act protects water to enforce that it is free of all contaminates that may be found in drinking water above and below the ground. It protects the place water is found to make sure it is not polluted. In Florida, the company Zephyrhills is founding next to K.P Hole, where we snorkeled in the spring river. If this company decided to dump chemicals into the spring, the safe drinking water act would be broken. We are fortunate to have safe water to drink daily.

Communicate by hustings, purring, and growling. When baby panthers are born, they are blind with black fur all around.
Environmental Importance: Helps keep the animals found in their diet's populations in balance. They also protect the plants around their territory by not lets other consumers into their land.
Endangered Species Act: The Florida Panthers were one of the first animals to be added to the Endangered Species List in 1973.
Organization helping/impact: Conservationists are working to find a cause for their disease and improve their health. The Nature Conservancy is helping to find a safe place for panther to live. By donating money, they can save their home and all them to grow into an abundant population.

Watch out for marine life when you are boating. For the sake of the beautiful animals, please go at the limits posted. The motor in the boat pollutes the water and can hit sea turtle's shell. This effects their way of eating because they can no longer eat at the bottom of the ocean. If you want to see more gorgeous creatures.
