Hydro-thermal explosion occurs when super-heated water (400 degreesF) trapped below the Earths surface. The liquid quickly turns into steam, violently working its way through the confining rock. Boiling fragments of mud, steam, water, and rock are launched few meters into the air and several meters in diameter.

Yellowstone has over 10,000 hydro-thermal features in it's park, these features eject boiling fragments of rock, mud, stream, and water into the air. These are triggered by earthquakes. By following the pattern of earthquake and hydro-thermal activity we could differentiate between more safe and quite parts of Yellowstone and the dangerous and risky parts.

While trying to find the right spot to place a research base on for Yellowstone is quite difficult as we can not predict when, where, and what time a deadly explosion will happen. however we can predict volcanic eruptions using instruments and understanding the volcanic history.

Our location recommendations are to build the research base in the south-western area of Yellowstone. We must be careful not to build to close or inside of the caldera. Also in order to not disturb the beauty of the park we do not want to be visible from main roads. Our suggested location is 44.25N 110.8W this location would place you near the Pitchstone Plateau.

After the last three large eruptions that occurred about 2.1 million years and 640,000 years ago. We had made an recurrence interval of 600,000 to 800,000 years, which means we are waiting for the next eruption to happen soon. A volcano can be predicted if instruments called seismic spiders are placed all over yellowstone triggered points, we can watch deformation, earthquakes, and hydrothermal activity without risking the safety of the scientists. We can also be able to identify where would be a safe spot to place the observatory.

The chosen location is just outside of the caldera boundary allowing for easy access to retrieve data from the caldera but also not directly on the caldera in case of eruption. Next is the location is right on top of the movement of the calderas over the past years so we can track this date with ease. The location is also not visible from major roads therefore not affecting the beauty of the park.

If there are any long-period earthquakes or data from deformation shows changes in the thickness of magma and it's acceleration. This can result that a volcano is at it's unrest. Once this happens, you will have to remove yourself from Yellowstone, if unable to do so. Cover your face with a mask and get on the nearest exit possible.
