Watch the video assigned to you first without sound, then a second time with sound and finally, answer this question: how does your commercial use the stylistic and structural features of film and commercials to construct their messages about masculinity?

The commercial "It Smells Like a Man" by Brut Deodorant seeks to interchange masculinity with the ability to get girls. They do this by constantly showing men who use Brut Deodorant interacting with women. This is obviously targeted at male audiences who are most likely not as successful with women. This commercial seeks to appeal to them by providing a solution to their problem and that solution is to buy their product. The name of the product was also designed to appeal to men. Brut sounds awfully similar to "bro" and bro is a term used by many men. Besides the blatant imagery, the references to sex is heard in the words spoken by the narrator. The narrator is heard saying that the deodorant "gives you long-lasting protection". This phrase is similarly spoken in condom commercials which are also targeted at young men. I think it is also important to note that the voice of the narrator is very deep which helps convey a voice of authority.

The Old Spice ad uses stylistic features such as imagery from different elements like the horse to exemplify what masculinity should be and look like. Additionally, the man in the ad continuously repeats that "a man shouldn't smell like a woman" thus saying a man should look and smell a certain way in order to be a real man.

In this commercial the main character uses many different techniques to make himself appear more "strong" and "attractive". He surrounds himself with clean shaven men and portrays them as inferior to make him appear to be that much stronger and more desirable. He constantly travels to different locations in "epic" or "action packed" ways in order to make his life look more interesting. He later introduces a man who is in bed with two women which makes men feel like his product will allow them to be more appealing to women. Overall he portrays the message that his product will change the consumer's life to make them more desirable in many different ways.

When we watched the video with no sound, I thought it worked well in terms of advertisement and appeal. All of the men were good looking, modern, and clean. Stereotypical masculine traits, but still arguably sought out by everyone. However when we re-watched with the sound on, a lot of more absurd stereotypes were made. The commercial's advertising features portray a sense of "should" in men. "Men like masculine colors so we made it dark blue and silver". The appeal in this could be that body cream in society is portrayed as a "girly" thing, so this was Nivea's attempt at making face cream seem more masculine, therefore saying that this brand is okay to use, because it's masculine enough. Toxic Masculinity alert!! :/ :/

What the Nivea Men message it is trying to get out is that this cream is for men and it was made by men. Most light colors for example pink, purple are associated as "feminine" colors while as the dark colors are more associated as dark colors. For example the color that they choose was dark blue and their justification for it was because its a masculine color. Also it mentions that men like things basic, yet has attention to detail. This masculine idea of everything has to be basic. Also if we see the atmosphere it is very basic with very dark colors proving the masculine idea

In the Brut Deodorant commercial ¨It Smells Like a Man¨, they try to push the notion that by wearing this particular deodorant they will attract women. They portray this by showing women and men caressing each other in loving matter while the narrator describes how women love men that smell like men. Also, every time the woman and man are together there always in a warm and romantic setting. Thus, demonstrating that the smell of man will make women more drawn to you.

In the "Nivea Men Creme" commercial, Nivea want to fit their brand into the stereotypes of what they think men want. They want to target the male audience who believe this is what masculinity truly is. They make it into a blue and sliver color because it represents a "masculine color". In the video we notice that it's men who are making this cream, men who are testing it out, and men narrating the video. They also use the stereotypes of what men should look like and act so they can portray who should be the men to use this product.

The Brut deodorant commercial, "It Smells Like a Man" correlates wearing their deodorant with getting women. This is pushed through women being present in every scene that is not a shot only of the product. This is meant to create the idea that women are drawn to men who will wear the deodorant. This is also reinforced through the narrator that says, "For every man that wears Brut deodorant, there is a woman who'll be glad he did." This quote creates the idea every man who wears the deodorant will have a woman.
