After first brainstorming responses to the role-card questions in homogenous groups (i.e., all "philosophers") students broke into trios and had self-directed discussions. Trios ended their discussions by writing their own essential questions about the book. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Differentiation by Lexile Level in a Jigsaw:<br>Students were given playing cards in what appeared to be a randomly distributed way.  In reality, each suit represented a lexile range.  Four groups were formed: low, mid-low, mid-high, and high.  Students read an article appropriate for them, but about the same topic (environmental problems) and were required to utilize the same skill (evaluate pros and cons of argument). </div>]]></description>
