knocking on wood was originated in German folklore, where supernatural beings are thought to live in trees, and they could be invoked for protection. The tradition was made from the pagans who thought that trees were home of the faries, spirits, and other creatures. People might knock or touch wood to request good luck. It could also distract spirits with evil intentions.

In the story the son of the White's family had wished for death. He died. Then the mother had asked the father to wish for the son to come back to life. Soon enough they heard a knocking on the door. They figured that the knocking was the son that had come back to life. Then they wished for the knocking to not be the son. They looked outside and there was no one to be found. It almost seems as if the son knocked on the door wishing and hoping that he doesn't have to come back to life because he obviously wanted to die for a reason.
