According to a website by Linda Alchin, Anne Boleyn was the wife of King Henry VIII and the queens mother. She was charged with treason, adultery, and incest all very serious crimes at the time. Because of her crimes she was ordered to be burned at the stake, but the King gave her a break and sentenced her to hang (Tsandelis).

Another famous criminal went by the name of Robert Deverux he was famous because a website said "one day in 1598 the Queen refused a request of his hand he turned his back on her by pulling his sword out and nearly killing her but was stopped by guards. He was forgiven later on, but later on in rage, he plotted to seize the Queen and take control of the government. The Queen found out about this and she got her right hand man, Robert Cecil, to arrest him.Robert surrendered and was imprisoned in the Tower of London for treason. He begged to not be executed in public, but instead privately, and that wish was granted because of his reputation around London. "The beheading process took three strokes and the executioner held up the head of Robert Deverux, saying 'God save the Queen!' (Tsandelis).

According to an article, by Elizabethan crime and punishment was not a pleasant subject. Crimes were dealt with by violent, cruel punishments. Many punishments and executions were witnessed by hundreds ("Elizabethan Age").
According to a presentation Laws made by the queen at this time lacked common sense. Some laws were it was illegal to be catholic even though it was one of the main religions at the time. Another law that was ridiculous is that ship owners could legally kidnap single men to be a part of their crew ("Laws, Crime, and Punishment In the Elizabethan Era").

According to a website common crimes such as theft of something over 5 pence (British Currency) was punished by hanging. Begging was also illegal, beggars were punished by being beaten until they reached the stones that marked the town boundary. If they were caught begging again they were sent to jail and sometimes even hung (Alchin).
According to a website capital offenses included murder, manslaughter, rape, arson, or witchcraft. The highest offense of them all was treason. If you were accused of treason you faced one of the worst punishments at the time. The offender was hung, taken down before he was dead, dragged face downward through the streets by a horse's tail, and then chopped into four pieces. The body parts were displayed in a public place as a warning to others who might be tempted to do what the traitor had done ("Capital Offenses").

Stated by a website Constables were a form of law enforcement devised to replace an earlier system of two sheriffs in each town, because it had become corrupt. Constables were ideally supposed to be yeoman. Yeoman consisted of landowners and small tradesman who usually did not want to serve as a constable. Since they didn't want to serve, the poor and uneducated were chosen to be the constables. Constables in London were assigned to the parts of the city they lived in. This meant there was no city wide police force (Campbell).

According to The Prison System "In Elizabethan times, people were arrested for many different reasons, such as vagrancy, petty theft, slander, debt, [and] assault"(Tara Drouillard). An article states at this time it was easy for anyone to request a warrant against someone to get them arrested as long as the person requesting it had enough money to pay for it. Each of the prisons in London had different levels for it's prisoners. These levels depended on what crime they committed and how serious it was. "Officially, keepers were to charge fees only for the prisoners’ committal, discharge, and exemption from fetters. However, prisoners had to pay more money if they wanted their own cell, meat and claret at every meal, and tobacco (169). Prisoners lived comfortably in this manner as long as they were able to pay for it. When they could no longer afford to live at this level of the prison, they had to move to one of the lesser but relatively comfortable areas, and finally to the worst area of the prison" (Tara Drouillard).

Stated in a article the Elizabethan era was one of the most ruthless and gory times for punishments and torture. The ruthlessness was shown in the worst punishment know as being drawn and quartered. "The grisly details included cutting the prisoner down before he died from hanging, and disemboweling him." (Picard). Disemboweling involves cutting the offender open and removing their internal organs. After that the offender is quartered. Quartering is as gory as it gets for the time, the offender's limbs were cut off along with the head (Picard).

In an article it states passing laws in the Elizabethan Era was a lot like our system today. It is different because it kind of took the people out of the equation. "Elizabethan England laws that were created during these times needed the approval and the consent of Queen Elizabeth I. Though the Queen can make laws like the Royal Proclamations, other laws cannot be passed just by the lone intention of the Queen. In order for the law to be passed, the Queen needed to craft a Bill and the Bill should be forwarded to the Parliament" ("Listing of

important Elizabethan Times England Laws"). Not all laws at this time were ridiculous the Poor Act of 1576 was passed so the town could provide jobs for the poor in their community ("Listings of important Elizabethan Times England Laws").

According to an article, written by Linda Alchin, Elizabethan crime and punishment was very similar and different from today. Obviously nowadays our punishments are less violent than they were during the Elizabethan Era. Some crimes are also taken less seriously than they were back then such as begging. The punishment for begging previously was getting beaten but now there isn't any punishment. We also have a police force similar to the constables back then, they have a jurisdiction for different parts of the city or whole counties. Elizabethan prisons were sometimes very cushy. Prisoners could pay the prison to have certain luxury items that are illegal in prison today (Alchin).
