In the first panel, the kids are arriving at the war base and their hands are up and waving to show that they are just kids trying to have fun. But in the second panel, their hands are up in support for Iran and the war, showing how their innocence and childhood is being taken away and how they are being indoctrinated. Another way that Satrapi criticizes the use of children in war is through graphic weight. In the first panel the children are wearing all white, showing how they are innocent. Her father is just standing behind her with his arms by his side staring at her reaction. Whilst Marjane and her family handle a significant amount of criticism towards the Iranian government, all of their criticism of the state disappear once a longtime rival of the state in Iraq invades.
