Going off of the discussion relating to Chikako being the first female that Kikuji sees and her being the only one left at the end of the novel, I agree with what Claire said about the novel coming full circle. The interesting thing is that Chikako wanted to control who Kikuji married and wanted to create stability in his life by marrying him off to the Inamura girl. However, Chikako is the one who originally had an affair. Chikako is the one that brought chaos and discomfort to Kikuji's life and her intended placement of the Inamura girl in Kikuji's life is almost an apology of the instability that she caused for Kikuji. Essentially, I think that Chikako being the only one left relates to the idea that Kikuji could never escape his father's reputation and Chikako herself was not able to undo the damage she had done to his life. - Jessica M.

Folajinmi Oguntolu
I think that the relation between the Inamura girl and the title goes deeper than the fact that she had a thousand cranes handkerchief. In Japan, it is traditionally believed that the thousand cranes are a symbol of luck, and it seems as though the Inamura girl is the luckiest character. As far as we know, she does have any dark secrets or any flaw whatsoever. Meanwhile, Kikuji is full of secrets and lies.It could also be seen as lucky that she didn't en up marrying Kikuji, because he probably would have cheated on her ad cause a life of pain and sorrow.
