This work is a response to the Covid-19 virus and how it has affected those working, living or visiting someone within a care home.
Within the care setting, where I work, the residents, their families and the workers were thrown into an unsettling experience as they dealt with the consequences of the virus. This situation has impacted the mental and physical welfare of everyone involved.
Some of the shirts on display belong to residents inside the care home and their friends and relatives who have been unable to visit them during the pandemic. There are also shirts that belong to nurses, cleaners and healthcare assistants who work within the care home. The shirts have all been loaned to me for the duration of the show and will be returned to their owners after the show.
This work follows on from work I had made previously, which examined the change from utility to futility of clothing as one’s cognitive and physical abilities change e.g. through dementia. The resulting work had an autobiographical element as I had utilised my own clothing within the work. This piece also has an autobiographical element as I work in a care home and I have incorporated one of my shirts into the piece.
The shirts on display have been buttoned together to create a new form that is then put under tension by being fixed onto the wooden frames. The wooden frames, in conjunction with the clothes pegs and string, are mimicking the isolating effect of the virus, in that the pandemic has pulled apart the social connections that are a necessary part of human existence.
This work has been made possible because of the help and support I have received from the residents, their families and my fellow co-workers, at Skibbereen Residential Care Centre.
