“America first” is a chant that is both echoed throughout Spike Lee’s movie BlacKkKlansman and has also permanently altered the American identity in recent years.
BACKGROUND INFO:
BlacKkKlansman was an overnight success, which gained universal acclaim by telling a true story set in the 1970’s that parallels many of the same social and political issues faced today. Based on the 2014 memoir Black Klansman by Ron Stallworth, the plot takes viewers to Colorado Springs, Colorado in the 1970’s where the city’s first Black police officer attempts to infiltrate and expose the local Ku Klux Klan (KKK) chapter. From the wardrobe to the language to the politics, viewers are transported to a post-Civil Rights Era America that seems like a far cry from the modern, globalized world of 2021.

BACKGROUND INFO:
 The Hate U Give, written by Audrey Wells in 2018, is about a Black teenage female’s experience of growing up in a predominantly Black ghetto. Through Starr, the central character in the book, Wells portrays a powerful story of racism, white privilege, and police brutality so convincingly, that anyone one reading the book is able to feel what the main character had to contend with on a daily basis. The events portrayed in The Hate U Give highlights many recent events all over the world such as the profound attention given to the murder of George Floyd and the international acceleration of the BLM movement.
THESIS:

BACKGROUND INFO:
The television series that has ran for four seasons starting in 2017 is set in the dystopian society of Gilead, a totalitarian regime formed after a new civil war in the United States. Gilead’s rule focuses on enslaving fertile women all with the pretense that it is in the name of the Bible. Its extremist interpretation of the Bible leaves women in a second class status with little to no say as to what happens to their bodies and unable to ever escape without fear of death. The series follows a handmaid named June in “the time before” and renamed Offred in the time of Gilead. Throughout time, June becomes radicalized in her opposition against Gilead as she is forced to endure terrible circumstances such as being striped away from her family, rape, and torture.
THESIS:
The Handmaid’s Tale provides a harsh reflection of realities women face today in the United States through its themes of decreasing birth rates, control over their bodies and reproduction, strains in democracy, and women-led rebellion.

Each tape is aimed towards the individuals who made big impacts in Hannah’s life. The protagonist, Clay Jensen, must listen to these tapes to figure out the reasons for this unfortunate ending of Hannah. Background:
Autism is one of the fastest growing developmental disorders in the world. Luckily, there is growing knowledge and recognition for those individuals on the spectrum and their families. The Netflix original series Atypical gives viewers a glimpse into the life of Sam Gardner, a high school student who is on the autism spectrum. He faces challenges daily that are unique to his disorder, but also ones that are common amongst todays typically developing youth. The show gives viewers a glimpse into the realities people face while living with a developmental disorder and also how it can affect their friends and family. 
Thesis:
Atypical reflects on themes that should be more prevalent and acknowledged in today's society, such as advocacy, awareness, family, and independence.

You also learn that she she leaves behind 13 different tapes about 13 different people. Those tapes talk about and describe how and what those 13 different people did to her, or how they made her feel. Their is one main character besides Hannah Baker called Clay Jensen. This young man listens to all 13 tapes and has to decipher which tape is for which person and he learns what every person has done to her.

Although the characters and overall situations in the Marvel universe are of fantasy and sci-fi, there are many issues conveyed that are relatable to real life.

In the 2019 film Joker, the fictional character Arthur Fleck wrote a heartbreaking entry in his diary that reads, “The worst part of having a mental illness is people expect you to behave as if you don’t.”
Background:
This is one of the most powerful quotes in the film because it reflects his mental state and the pressure he feels from society. In addition to manage his mental illness, Arthur feels as he must keep his condition hidden by suppressing his negative behaviors; thus, by having a happy facade, he will be accepted by society. This demonstrates that having a mental illness is not easy, after all, there is a lot of stigma around it in our society because of the lack of awareness of mental health issues. People are expected to behave a certain way; this can be incredibly challenging for someone showing mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, or schizophrenia. A person suffering a mental illness is constantly viewed negatively and unfortunately, sometimes, the stigma surrounding mental health can result in harmful effects such as violence (“Mental Health: Overcoming the Stigma of Mental Illness”). Inspired by the comic books, the psychological film Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, introduces the life of Arthur Fleck, a mentally ill comedian ignored by society, portrayed by the actor Joaquin Phoenix. 
Thesis:
Without a doubt, this film has been very controversial because of the complexity of the themes connected to the world in the 21st century, such as child abuse, mental illness, bullying, and violence.

Through music, the audience is captivated watching the teenage lives of Glinda the Good and Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West. A journey begins from the first day of school to Elphaba meeting the wizard and discovering her true power, to finding love and overcoming obstacles along the way, ending with a melting puddle.
Thesis:
In Wicked four themes that stand out are greed, racism, fear, and forbidden love, all of which are prevalent in today’s society within politicians, Blacks and Asians, antisemitism, and the royal family.
