These are a series of 4 paintings by the
artist Alfonse Mucha named Times of Day, and I have the set hanging in my hallway at home. Each panel represents a time of the day i.e Morning, Midday, Dust and Evening. Mucha specialised in Art Nouveau during the late 1800's, an art movement which focused upon the female form, and the decorative curved lines of plants and flowers. Mucha's use of LINE, SHAPE and VALUE (Hutchesson, 2018) within his art gives his work meaning. LINE is characterised by the curves used: thick, medium and thin lines that wrap around the prominent central figure SHAPE. Mucha uses the female form as his main SHAPE within most of his work, highlighting their soft feminine curves and lines. VALUE is used to display the range of light to dark (Hutchesson, 2018). Mucha uses VALUE to distinctly marry together the four art panels- they show the progression from soft morning light, bright midday sun, the long shadows of sunset, and finally to the dark stillness of night.

Music

Music is possibly my favourite of the visual arts, even if my only talent musically is appreciating others' work! I'm a massive Beatles fan, and love watching live performances of Beatles cover bands such as The Fabulous Beatle Boys. I love hearing the evolution of their music over the 8 years they were together as a band- their early music is so very different to their final musical masterpieces. In their earliest songs such as Love Me Do (Please Please Me, 1962), the FORM (Hutchesson, 2018) used is very simple; the song uses a basic unchanging RHYTHM (Hutchesson, 2018), only a uses drums, guitars, base and a harmonica, and the lyrics are fluffy and light based on young love. But three years later with the release of Norwegian Wood (Rubber Soul, 1965) their style had shifted. TIMBRE and TEXTURE (Hutchesson, 2018) had come heavily into play with the use of a sitar as the main instrument as well as using 12 string guitars and cymbals- creating a depth and layering to the sound of the song. Their sound and musical genius began to hit its peak with songs such as I am the Walrus (Magical Mystery Tour, 1967) featuring orchestral accompaniment and bizarre poetic style lyrics sung erratically which demonstrates a change in DYNAMICS and EXPRESSION (Hutchessen, 2018). The musical and lyrical diversity of The Beatles is phenominal; I can find a Beatles song to suit whatever mood I'm in- that's why I love their music so much.

I can't dance to save myself, but I love watching dance routines and trying to join in anyway. "Dance is an important means of expressing inner feelings, experiences and cultural identity" (Wright, 2012, p.85) This dance group from California is called Kaba Modern; an all Asian dance troupe that expresses their collective Asian culture's dance styles. They use such creative CHOREOGRAPHY, telling a vivid story through their movements to the music; their signature dance style uses a combination of Popping, Locking, Break Dancing and Jabbawockee. They appear to be having so much fun as they are dancing; such a universal form of the Creative Arts where the human body is used as they medium of expression (Wright, 2012, p.85).

Art Deco is my favourite style; architecturally and artistically. I just adore the use of geometrical SHAPE and LINES (Hutchesson, 2018) - especially the use of squares broken up or overlapped with circles or curves. Art Deco is truly classic, a style that never dates, and that's why I went for an Art Deco theme when I designed and built my house. It's so aesthetically pleasing to me; echoing a time of old-school glamour, style for style's sake, and decadence.

Drama with a musical twist! Hairspray is my favourite musical movie- I would one day love to see the stage musical to compare them. The beautiful 1960's COSTUMES, the growing TENSION of the possibility of interracial dancers on television in America, the many ROLES played by the characters in the movie- the list goes on. My daughter loves to play-act the role of Tracy Turnblad as she watches the movie and dances along. "Drama offers the child different opportunities for developing understanding- of drama, of themselves and of their world." (Wright, 2012, p.115) We watch Hairspray together, singing the songs and dancing along as a really fun bonding experience- it's also a great excuse to goof off together!!!

Media Arts

My daughter's 'dream' in life is to have her own youtube channel and spends A LOT of time making mini movies using the iMovie app, or recording little skits with her cousins and friends. At first I was concerned about her 'dream', and believed she should be more academically focused. Then it hit me- this is her 'thing', this is how she creates MEANING in her world. "Media production is widely accepted by media educators as a means of promoting self-expression, developing in-depth critical understandings and providing a more participatory, hands on approach to pedagogy, which students find motivating." (Write, 2012, p.139) She puts so much effort into recording footage to suit the scenes she needs for her iMovie to make chronological and plot-line sense- I just love watching her new blockbusters! She actually introduced me to the media arts; before she showed me iMovie I thought slick mini movies were actually a form of the Black Arts; something impossible for someone like me to master! But now I often have cameo appearances in her productions- as long as I take direction.
