They are honest and are "long-term" and will be around for a long time. A hip person is short term and trying to impress you with just the surface and what they have. Pausch says he would take an earnest person over a hip person any day. He gives example of how he was hiring someone who is an Eagle Scout he would hire them over others because there must be an earnestness about them.
