In Spanish, the past tense has two forms, el pretérito and el imperfecto (the preterite and imperfect). We will learn el pretérit now, and el imperfecto later. This form of the past tense expresses events that happened and have since stopped and actions that fit within a specific time frame. For now, only concern yourself with this tense and how to conjugate it correctly. Most verbs are regular in the preterite tense, some are regular except for one or two pronouns, and a few are completely bonkers.

You might have noticed that the nosotros (we) form of Cantar is the same in the preterite as it is in the present. This is true for all regular AR verbs. This is when you use context to determine whether the verb is in the past or present tense.
