<title>Maria Carmona Due Date: Sept 10,2017 Sped 771Response for book All American Boys Describe the setting (time and place) for your book. Could the story take place in a different setting? Why or why not?The setting for this story is the 21st century in a city called Springfield. The setting depicts what is going on today with police brutality and innocent young black men who are being killed because of their skin color . The setting gives the perspectives of two high schoolers , one of them white and the other black. One of them is from the East side of Springfield and the other is from the West Side of Springfield. Both students attend Springfield Central High School where they both play basketball. Although they attend the same school , they rarely know one another or have very little interaction with one another. One event brings both of them together as one towards the middle to the ending of the story. The story seems to be taking place in a neighborhood that is on the decline. People are describing the neighborhood this way because of the large number of blacks and latinos who are now living there. According to Quinn, one of the narrators in the book he states that before the blacks and latinos moved in Springfield was 95% white and people viewed it as a good neighborhood. His mother warns him if he sees a group of guys walking down the streets who look like “thugs” for him to cross the street or go in the opposite direction. The way he is making seem is that his mother is basically telling him if he sees a group of blacks and or latinos to cross the street or go the other way. We see this described in dialogues he has with Paul, the officer who beat Rashad, his mother, Guzzo, and other characters in the story. The story changes settings as the two characters give their narratives. The different places it takes place at is Springfield High School, Jerry’s , Mother’s Pizza, the hospital Rashaad is in, Jill’s house, and the houses of the two narrators. The different places give the reader a clearer understanding on what is going on in these different places. For example at the high school we see their is a divide in opinions when the video of Rashaad getting beat by Paul surfaces. We also get to know Rashad&#39;s emotions while he is in the hospital. The different places create different emotions for the characters in the story as well as the reader. While the story changes settings, so did my emotions change. I was able to feel the emotions students felt in the high school because when these issues of police brutality happen, there is this same divide at the colleges I have ever attended. People who think police officers are doing their jobs and they have it hard because of the “thugs” and people who believe that young black men are being killed by white police officers because of the color of their skin. The story could take place in any setting as the issues of police brutality, race, gender , etc are happening all over the world today. We see these issues in different settings across America. These issues have been happening since before the 21st century, however with the advances in technology we are able to see it with our own eyes instead of from the viewpoint of a person who had to live through it. We are living through it today .All in all the different settings in the big allow for the reader to connect to the characters and the emotions they are feeling in the various places. The reader is able to look at the story through the lens of the characters. The setting helps to create the mood of the story and it influences how we the readers feel about the text.</title>
