Hello most of you know most of these details but here is a quick introduction. My name is Danielle (DJ). For well over a decade I have been working in Student Housing as an RA, CA, Residence Life Coordinator and Manager of Residence Life. I spent a large portion of my time at Algonquin College and now work as the Manager of Homestay and Off-Campus Housing as part of International Student Services in the Faculty of International Education in beautiful Nanaimo, BC at Vancouver Island University. In November my husband and I are expecting our first child, so we are getting ready for another change in our lives. There are many things that that interest me about technological development within the Student Affairs perspective in Higher Education.

Pics Below:
My dog Max (Top Right)
My husband Ian (Bottom Right)

Shifting from a Campus-based Model to A Learner Based Model

As I mentioned, I work in Student Services specifically within a housing. As technology shifts our learning models I am always thinking about what happens to the "out of class environments" and what radical transformation will they undergo. It is interesting because the transformation from a physical presence of a group of students in one place is no longer required (Upcraft and Goldsmith, 2000 ). The idea that intrigues me is how do we shift the supports to wherever the learner may be? In the video George Siemens, "Connecting learning: Technology, change in higher education" said that "That campuses have a structural model that does not fit the lifestyle of the current student." I agree that the 8-4 Monday-Friday system is changing. Just this summer our advising team took advantage of Facebook Live to deliver a live question and answer session that has been viewed a few thousand times and was so simple. You can see a link to these below at Worldviuiss, under videos. It can reach students in different places around the world. I know some campuses even do advising through live chat.

So my interest is how does that impact traditional campus based experiences like housing? I know Royal roads uses Residence strategically within their blended model. Residence/ Housing programs are quickly adapting technologies to help better support students and respond to various program needs, administrative functions, and the student wants" Examples include:

StarRez (and other cloud based programs), Roommate sorting, Facebook Connect, Smart technologies for payment systems and remote monitoring for laundry, and various security features. There a great many things that can enhance the housing experience-but will technology reduce the need for traditional experiences like housing?
Resources

Siemens, G.

There many other developments that peak my interest regarding technology are as follows:

Introduction of Informal Campus Learning Spaces-Such as Maker Spaces with digital creation tools. I know a few housing models that are introducing these types of spaces for their students which could also connect on-campus students with their online counterparts.

The Use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) in Higher Education)- An example I find interesting is at Deakin University in Australia. They used IBM Watson to create a "24/7/365 online student advisory experience" (2017, para.7). Apparently this resulted in a 5-10% reduction of inquiries managed by staff having answered more than 30 000 questions.

Resources

Kelly, R.
