Sacrificing for others will spread joy and change

"Now, here, take this ten
dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the
mistake of latching onto my pocketbook"
"The boy wanted to say something else other than 'Thank you Ma'am'"

Rodger wanted to say something more to her because she changed him. She changed him by her attitude and sacrifice for him, even when he tried to steal from her. The sacrifice she made helped him see what he needed to change about himself. The end of the short story is open and doesn't tell us what happens to Rodger but you can see and feel that he has changed because of her and he will do better in the future. And it started with the sacrifice form her. Sacrifice spreads change and joy. Sacrifice for others helps us.

Poverty can bring desperation.

After a while she said, "I were young once and I wanted things I could not get."
"when a boy ran up
behind her and tried to snatch her purse."

Rodger tries to steal from her because he is poor. He steals to eat. She teaches him he doesn't have to, but she also knows this poverty. It is brought up several times in the work and Rodger has a moment with Ms. Jones when he knows that she was also poor. She knows what it's like and can connect with him through it. They connect through their experience with poverty. They connect through knowing the desperation.

Compassion and understanding for others can bring change.

I believe that your hungry, or been hungry to
try to snatch my pocketbook."
"Now, here, take this ten
dollars and buy yourself some blue suede shoes. And next time, do not make the
mistake of latching onto my pocketbook"

She understands him, and shows compassion on him. After she sees the real him she decides to help him. Se makes such a big impact on him because of the compassion he gets from her. Because of his family situation he might not have gotten any compassion from anyone else. Ms. Jones might have been one of the few people to really understand him. She has her own way of showing him compassion but it works and he becomes better. This shows compassion in the story.
