         <description><![CDATA[<div>The layers of the epidermis from superficial to deep are:<br>-1: stratum corneum<br>-2: stratum lucidum<br>-3: stratum granulosum<br>-4: stratum spinousum<br>-5: stratum basale <br><br>Stratum Corneum: they are known as the "horny layers". They are 20-30 dead. <br><br>Stratum Lucidum: This layer is only found in the thicker skins. It can be found in the heels of the feet and the palms of the hand. <br><br>Stratum Granulosum: This layer contains granules. <br><br>Stratum Spinosum: This layer contains the most layers. In the Stratum Spinosum, keratinocyte will be found. <br><br>Stratum Basale: This layer contains actively mitotic stem cells. Overtime, as the cells age, they become a part of superficial          <description><![CDATA[<div>People that live closest to the equator have much more melanin than those near the poles. Closer to the equator, a higher concentration of melanin is advantageous because it will provide protection against the sun's harmful rays.          <description><![CDATA[<div>There is a correlation between the amount of melanin in the skin and cancer. If there is not enough melanin in the skin, the skin will not provide as much protection from the sun as it would for someone with a darker complexion/more melanin. Due to this, cancer may occur more in those with less melanin in their skin.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>There is a correlation with vitamin D deficiency and the amount of melanin in skin. People with a high amount of melanin are more at risk for being diagnosed with vitamin D deficicency. This is beacuse the high melanin levels block out most of the sunlight, which is a main source of vitamin D. Whereas people with lower levels of melanin have less of a chance of having viatmin D deficiency.
