Zipped or compressed files can be sent much faster over the internet as the size of the file is reduced by removing unnecessary details (higher/lower frequencies in .mp3 files)
Advantages:
Takes up less disk space, reduces file size
The data can be sent much faster over the internet 
Disadvantages:
Anti-virus software may not be able to scan compressed files, leaving the system open to viruses (Trojans, spyware, ransomware)
