One way a teacher may differentiate instruction is by allowing students some freedom in subject matter. For example, if an English teacher has a lesson on how to write a strong paragraph, they may create multiple prompts/topics for students to pick from. In this way, all students are working on their paragraph creation skills but each student can pick a topic they feel comfortable writing on.

For example, a history teacher may allow students to demonstrate their knowledge of the Civil Rights movement by:
- Creating a timeline of significant events
- Writing a paragraph on 3 different types of activism people used during the Civil Rights movement
- Creating a resume/biography for one significant person from the Civil Rights movement
