Dramatic: In chapter 6 in page 3, Kino talks about the different types of tree's and how they are bad. Yet Juana already knows the things but Kino doesn't know that she already knows, but us as a reader know that she knows.

Situational: When the trackers where on the look for Kino and his family, us as a reader can think that Kino is going to get caught and so will his family, but instead Kino was able to escape and save his family.

Personification: "Only his eyes searched the darkness, and in the pale light of the moon that crept through the holes in the brush house Kino saw Juana arise silently from beside him." The reason why its personification is because the author put this in the story to describe how far the light of the moon went. Chapter 5

Simile: "A town is a thing like a colonial animal." The reason why this is a simile is because the author included this in the story because the news travels so fast it seems to have a memory and motivation of its own. Chapter 3

Metaphor: "It bit through neck and deep into chest, and Kino was a terrible machine" This is a metaphor since it's comparing Kino to a machine. Chapter 6

The theme of the story is greed does not always led to happiness. We know this because Kino's life was "perfect" the way it was, but once he got the pearl his personality changed, and he became "evil' because the pearl was. We can take this into modern-day by realizes that money, or something that costs a lot may not always help you with your life needs, and may even make your life worse than it is, but taking away loved ones. Greed can take away happiness, it changes people completely.

Kino: Kino is first a kind person and very caring about his family, we know this because "In his mind a new song had come, the Song of Evil, the music of the enemy, of any foe of the family, a savage, secret, dangerous melody, and underneath, the song of the Family cried plaintively." This shows that he was worried for his son. But near the end he says repeatedly "I am a man." trying to show that he is stronger and independent.

Juana: Juana is a good mother, who is good at taking care of her first son,she is also a hard working mother, we know this because in the story it quotes, "Juana went to the fire pit and uncovered a coal and fanned it alive while she broke little pieces of brush over it." and "Juana wants the doctor." she stays the same for the most part of the story till the end when she loses her baby and becomes depressed.
