Mayella Ewell is a criminal and a victim, because she is a victim of abuse, and her father still controls her life. However she is a criminal because she made a false accusation and lied to a court which ruined a mans life.

Mayella is both a criminal and a victim on the justice morality spectrum. On the criminal side, Mayella has falsely accused Tom of 🤬 and violence and committing perjury. This and also being backed up by a jury of all whites makes her a criminal in this position. But Mayella can also be a victim because she is forced to follow Bob's orders and is a victim of abuse.

Mayella is considered a victim due to her father's abuse towards her, but she is also a criminal because she falsely accused a man of poor minority of 🤬. "What did your father see in the window, the crime of 🤬 or the best defense to it? Why don't you tell the truth, child, didn't Bob Ewell beat you up?" Lee is stating that society is both cruel and harmless, it all just depends on how a person views the world. There will be good people and there will be bad people in the world, but sometimes a person is both good and evil. Lee wants the readers to understand how some people think and behave.

Lee is stating what life was for a black man and the unfair justices they faced on a daily basis. Tom Robinson faced huge discrimination in court and out of court. According to the text, "Fore I knew it he was on me. Just run up behind me, he did. He got me around the neck, cussin' me and sayin' dirt..." (page 241) This is Mayella's statement which falsely accuses Tom of these actions. We can infer he did not do this because of the evidence but still they made a biased verdict and confirmed Tom Robinson guilty.

If I were to be at the perspective of of Jean Scout Finch, I would declare Mayella Ewell as not only a terrible person, but also a criminal. after hearing Atticus's statements and points, I thought everyone would be in agreement that Mayella wasn't abused or raped by Tom, it was her father who did that to her. The readers don't know the whole story, and neither does Scout, but Scout could assure you that she "Don't see how any jury could convict on what we hear-" Tom was telling the truth. Tom's relaying of the events did not change once, whereas Mayella's fable changed over and over. To continue, Mayella talks about needing help fixing up a "chifforobe", but Tom exclaims that it's a door he was asked to come in and help with. Mayellas story has gaps throughout it, while Tom's was seamless and true. Tom spoke from the heart and you could hear his pain when he replayed the memory in his mind as he was telling the court what happened. Overall, if I were at the perspective of Scout, I would rule Mayella Ewell as a criminal.

I believe that she's a victim because in the book its said that she has been abused by her father physically, and also emotionally. She had to take care of her 7 brothers by herself. She's a criminal because she falsely accused Tom Robinson even though all he's done is be kind and help her for free. She was in the wrong for getting caught by her dad for sexually assualting him and tehn accusing him for 🤬.

To be fair she was a victim of her father's abusive behavior towards her and how he limits her life choices and education. Considering how she takes politeness as mocking her she doesn't seem to be very educated .

What Harper Lee states about society through Atticus' character in the book, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is the heartful, caring, and justice-defending people. Atticus in the story is defending Tom Robinson, a black man who was accused of raping Mayala Ewells, in court. He shows the good in people in society, unlike the Ewells. Even though he tells Scout he will not win the trial, and doesn't, he still fights for what is right. The reason they didn't win the court case even with mass amounts of evidence is because of race. Atticus shows the good people in society, the people who want equality.

Mayella is more of a complicated character to identify. You want to feel sorry for her after all she has a horrible life. But then again why is she putting an innocent man who has been so nice to her in danger? She is kind of both if anything I am sure she was scared of what her father might do to her which is understandable. But it is still awful that she could do that to Tom Robinson. Harper Lee is stating that in society there are people who do wrong only because they feel they have no choice I feel like she wants us to see someone who is both guilty and a victim and make us truly think about it.

What does Harper Lee state about the society in Maycomb from Atticus. In the novel "To Kill a Mocking Bird". Is that when he decides to defend Tom Robinson, his kids get called names and tell them thing about Atticus like hes a N word- lover and other terms. Another way Lee shows the society is the given proof that they have that Mayella Ewell is lying on the stand, witch is a federal offence, but they still find Tom guilty. This really shows that even though they had evidence on why it couldn't be Tom he was still found guilty because we was colored.

I think this because Mayella is a victim of her being beaten by her aclcoholic father and is forced to take care of her seven siblings. This makes her the victim. What makes her the criminal is because she is lying to the judge and the jury and sccusing and innocent man (Tom Robinoson) for 🤬.

Lee is stating thru tom Robinson that it was very easy for Mayella to blame Tom raping her because hes a a black male and they would most likely believe a white over a black. This says a lot about our society then and now. Alot of black people get blamed and shot for stuff they did not do because of the stereotype. In the story to kill a mockingbird Tom Robinson is a victim because he gets falsely accused of 🤬 and abuse. He ends up having to go to court because they believe mayella over tom. Atticus is fighting for tom and defending his side because he knows somethings off and hes not guilty. Later on we she starts to change up her story and studder and Tom starts to cry because if they believe mayella over him he will go to jail.

Mayella herself is accusing a man of physical assault and 🤬, although knowing he didn't commit such a crime because he knew the consequences of what could come. Mayella though lied for possibly more fear of abuse from her father, Bob Ewell. Mr. Ewell has abused Mayella before, especially when drunk. When, by Tom Robinson's account, Mayella tried to come onto him, Mr. Ewell came to the window near the end and was yelling at him. He made Mayella accuse Tom Robinson of sexual assault and take him to court. She is a victim of abuse but is a criminal for lying and putting an innocent man's life at stake by taking him to court.

She lied to everyone in court and lied in her testimony stating that Tom had chocked her and has sexually assaulted her and said that she had tried fighting back. She kept all her secrets inside about her father and Tom. She could easily be put in jail. She accused a innocent man of sexually assaulting her which was false and made his life horrible. She is also a victim of abuse from her father.

In the Novel To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Tom Robinson, a black man, who is falsely accused of 🤬. Lee describes in her novel the unfair justice black people got in the 1930s and the discrimination they faced in court. Tom Robinson is a hard working man who is honest and kind. During the trial, he tells the truth about what happened but no one believes him. "Mr. Finch I was going home one evenin, an when I passed the Ewell place Miss Mayella were on the porch, like she said she were. It seemed real quite like, an I didn't even know why. Then she says for me to come in there for a minute. Well, I went inside the fence and looked for something to work on. She said she got something for me to work on in the house. I went inside and she said the door was broken. I tried to fix it but there was notin to fix. I said to Miss Mayella this door is fine. Then she shet the door in my face. Then she told me she needed help to get something off the shelf. She told me to use the chair, and as I was reaching, she turned the chair around and jumped on me. She hugged me round the waist, and I could escape." (Page 258 and 259) Tom Robinson told the truth but no one believed him. This shows how black people were never believed and were always accused for things they did not do.

Jeremy Atticus Finch plays a big role in society. Lee commences his writing to make us visualize Jem's actions and how he shows potential in maturity. We all go through stages as he, himself did. We're born, we face personal tragedy; We learn from that tragedy, the tragedy impacts what we do, say, and feel. His early maturity is not only because of growth but also because of the environment's downfall such as the Great Depression and his mother's passing. Jem faces many downfalls considering his sensitivity toward Tom's case, Scout's personal being of containing anger, the scare of Boo Radley, and the communities hatred toward his father. We all relate to Jem because his life is blindly normalized by our everyday human cycle. We experience a tragedy like him, we experience maturity, we experience downfalls, we experience strong emotions, and we experience the feeling of being somewhat protective.

Atticus is a hard working man who cares for everyone even people of color. Considering the time the book is taken place in that isnt very common. Due to Atticus being the lawyer for Tom he is looked down upon by many yet he still cares for everyone. Even during the case he attempts to save Mayella by trying to get her to admit Bob abused her, even though she is framing Tom for 🤬. These few actions from Atticus show the people in our society who want the world to be a better place and want equality.

Harper Lee is stating that people in society have different lives around certain people which knowing about it could change someone's perspective about someone. For instance, Calpurnia have acted as two separate people when being around black or white people. Cal acts more formal and has good grammar around white people while when she is around black people, she speaks informally. In the book, it states, "Suppose you and Scout talked colored-folks' talk at home it'd be out of place, wouldn't it? Now what if I talked white-folks' talk at church, and with my neighbors? They'd think I was puttin on airs to beat Moses" (Lee 167). This shows that Cal does not want the people of her race to know that she can speak well and is possibly smarter than them. If people knew about it, it could ruin her reputation and cause consequences that could affect her like white people not taking favor of her being intellectual. In short, Mayella Ewell could be a victim because of needing to have a double-sided life to hide away the truth. If she speaks the truth publicly, negative results might come due to Bob Ewell being abusive.

Mayella accuses Tom of choking her and assaulting her without her consent even though he did none of that. Mayella also lies and changes her story consistently while in court. Mayella is a victim as well since she is abused by her father. Her father most likely gave her the bruised right eye as a person with a right hand hit her. Tom has a crippled right arm, while Mr. Ewell is right-handed. All in all, Lee is telling us through Mayella that some people can turn bad under the right circumstances as Mayella was a victim and didn't do any harm until she accused Tom of the crimes.

The citizens of Maycomb view Dolphus Raymond with pity, only knowing that he lives with black people and married a black woman because he is always drunk. If they were to look deeper though, they would be shocked. For example, page 228 says, “‘I try to give ‘em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they can latch onto a reason. When I come to town, which is seldom, if I weave a little and drink out of this sack, folks can say Dolphus Raymond’s in the clutches of whiskey-that’s why he won't change his ways. He can’t help himself, that’s why he lives the way he does.’” This proves how deep racism is in Maycomb. Dolphus is forced to put up an act for his neighbors. In order for him to live his happy life, he must pretend he is drunk and can’t help his predicament. Harper Lee is strongly showing how judgmental people are, especially in the ways of racism. If there was no judgment or racism in Maycomb county, Dolphus Raymond could live his happy life without having to hide his wants. This is the way that Harper Lee used Dolphus Raymond to portray Maycomb’s judgment.

She is innocent at the start of the story, but towards the end Scout begins to know how the word really is. Scout was exposed to the real life situations like 🤬, racism, and fear. Lee is stating about society through Scout by saying everything is real and at one point you would have to expand to real life situations. At the young age Scout and Jem had to go to court and see an innocent black man be blamed for something he did not do. This shows Scout and Jem racism and prejudice. That is how Lee uses Scout to state society through her.

Through Tom Robinson, book author Harper Lee is trying to state that being a man of color comes with many hardships, like racism and discrimination. This fact can be shown throughout many sections of the book, but in this case, it is mostly shown when Tom Robinson is facing discrimination and prejudice from within the court. In the text on page 264 it states, ““Yes, suh. I felt right sorry for her, she seemed to try more’n the rest of ‘em—”...The witness realized his mistake and shifted uncomfortably in the chair. But the
damage was done. Below us, nobody liked Tom Robinson’s answer.." This shows how being a man of color comes with many hardships because, as shown by the quote, people are more likely to disapprove of your opinions, thoughts, actions, and ideas. This also shows how Mayella was the criminal in the case while Tom was the victim because Mayella used Tom's race in her favor during the case. She was able to manipulate the crowd into thinking that Tom was guilty, with the use of many tactics, specifically ones like stereotypical prejudice and emotions. So in conclusion, since Tom Robinson's race affects the way that people perceive him, Mayella was able to exploit this opportunity in order to win the court over in her favor.

Mayella is a criminal because she lied to the judge on the stand, blamed Tom for stuff he never did such as 🤬, and ruined the rest of Tom's life. She is a victim because she is treated poorly at home and her father has abused her. While talking and answering questions on the stand, Atticus asks one specific question if her dad had ever touched her. She paused and waited a few seconds, then looked directly at her dad and finally answered with a lie. All in all, Mayella deserved a better life where she is treated right by her own father and where she doesn't lie or get herself into a lot of trouble.

In the book, To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee uses Tom Robinson, a black man who was accused of raping Mayella Ewell, a white girl that struggles living in poverty. Lee is trying to show that being colored in society comes with many struggles and challenges like racism and discrimination. One of many examples can be shown during the trial in court, when the jury expresses discrimination towards Tom Robinson. In the novel, on page 262 it states,"You were given thirty days once for disorderly conduct, Robinson?” asked Mr. Gilmer. “Yes suh.” “What’d the 🤬 look like when you got through with him?” “He beat me, Mr. Gilmer.” “Yes, but you were convicted, weren’t you?” Atticus raised his head. “It was a misdemeanor and it’s in the record, Judge.” I thought he sounded tired. “Witness’ll answer, though,” said Judge Taylor, just as wearily. “Yes suh, I got thirty days.” I knew that Mr. Gilmer would sincerely tell the jury that anyone who was convicted of disorderly conduct could easily have had it in his heart to take advantage of Mayella Ewell, that was the only reason he cared. Reasons like that helped." This shows that society discriminates against people of colored skin and you have to endure lots of obstacles and challenges as opposed to someone that is white. As the quote shows, the jury was stereotyping Tom Robinson since he was given thirty days for disorderly conduct he would be more likely to abuse Mayella, although all the evidence says otherwise. This proves that Mayella was the criminal because she blamed Tom Robinson for something he was innocent in, and she knew that she could easily fool the jury into believing this because of the racial stereotypes given to black people. As you can see, the color of Tom Robinson's skin hugely impacted his verdict because society thinks that black people are evil, lying, and can't be trusted, and they associate every single black person with this. Mayella took advantage of this, and used Tom Robinson to cover up her guilt and mistakes.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, Lee embeds morals within each character. For instance, Mayeella Ewell reveals to be a criminal, lying about her side of the story. To Kill a Mockingbird states, "Mayella was silent. She seemed to be trying to get something clear to herself."..."’No, I don't recollect if he hit me. I mean yes I do, he hit me”’ (Lee 247-248). Atticus asks Mayella a simple question, one which she stumbles upon. Lying when being questioned in a trial, is a crime which Mayella chose to commit, making her a criminal. What Lee is stating about society through Mayella Ewell is that people can not always take on challenges alone and must ask for help. If Mayella would have just asked for help, she would not have needed to lie when being questioned. Therefore, asking for help is not a bad thing and will benefit you, however, you must ask when you need it.

From the beginning, she is the one who tries to 🤬 Tom Robinson, and when he rejects her, she tries to get rid of him, thus getting rid of the evidence of her crimes, and the memories of them as well. She is also a victim in this case, as she was only beaten and put into this situation in the first place because of her father. However, that is no excuse for her acts throughout the story. Only a criminal would attempt to ruin someone else's life because they don't like their own. If she were truly only a victim, then she would have confessed to what she had done.

Harper Lee is stating that people in this world all have different views, and that they should be judged differently, and that they should not be judged with hate or racism. For example, Tom Robinson was always faced with distrust and suspicion, due to the color of his skin, and when he was accused of raping a girl, nobody question the situation except for atticus and the other family members. The text says, "Well, Mr Finch didn't act that way to Mayella and old man Ewell when he cross-examined them. The way that man called him boy all the time and sneered at him, and look around at the jury every time he answered.." This shows that even with logic and hard facts on his side, Tom Robinson was accused guilty and hated due to hate. So, Tom Robinson's role in this book is that a reminder to society how we can be hateful, and how we can change our ways. Even with evidence and facts, hate, racism, and biased can get in the way of judging somebody, which is why people called justice "Blind".

Although her claims are preposterous, given the fact that Tom hasn't had any use in his right arm for most of his life, most of the town believes Mayella when she says that he choked her two-handedly and took advantage of her. These actions are completely impossible for Tom to perform, therefore making him innocent. However, the entire town is so quick to blame him, simply because he is a black man. Evidently, Lee's statement about society is plainly that it is severely twisted. Racism has been so ingrained into people's minds and behavior, that they are quick to accuse somebody, merely because they are different, or "inferior".

Dolphus Raymond is a symbolic character in "To Kill a Mockingbird", and symbolic to the times in which this novel took place. Mr. Raymond had mixed children with his African American girlfriend and at the time, this was absurd behavior in Maycomb. Dolphus knew this about the people in Maycomb so he decided to give the people a reason to justify why he lived the way he did. He pretended to be drinking everyday but in reality the bag he was drinking "alcohol" out of actually had Coca- Cola inside it. Because of this, people believed he was drunk everyday or an alcoholic which would explain why he was dating a black woman as a white man. The text mentions, "I try to give 'em a reason, you see. It helps folks if they latch onto a reason" (268). Dolphus Raymond never should have to have done this because he simply believed it did not matter what skin color the person you were dating has, it's about the inside instead. This shows how society viewed white people who showed interest in black people as if they were a different species who no one could ever like. This also symbolizes how even in the midst of so much racism and hatred there are still people who have respect for people no matter what their skin color is, therefore, there is still hope racism does not have to win.

Harper Lee uses Atticus Finch to show that there is still some good in a bad society . In this novel the city of Maycomb has a common pattern of almost all of the residents being racist however Atticus is not one of them. The biggest example to show how pure hearted Atticus Finch is the constant fight for justice for Tom Robinson. Even though Atticus gets a bad reputation and name called for defending an African American he stays true to himself and continues to fight for him. While at the same time he teaches his kids many life lessons like not following into conformity when they know it's wrong and standing up for whats right.

Mayella Ewell is a victim and a criminal. Mayella Ewell is a victim because her father abused and raped her. However, Mayellla Ewell is a criminal because she accused Tom Robinson of these actions which aren't true. This is a form of perjury and in doing so Mayella could go to jail for up to 5 years. In conclusion, Mayella is a criminal and a victim.

Atticus Finch is portrayed as a difference in their society. He shows that there are people out there with different thinking that are not like others who all act like sheep to each other´s opinions. In Maycomb, there are not a lot of people who think like Atticus. He has a kinder heart to all people unlike others, who are kind hearted to only a certain group of people. There is a lot of racism themed throughout this town, but Atticus shows the other side. He defends a black man in court and tries his hardest to give him justice, which is a thing that not a lot of white folks did back then.

Scout is used by Harper Lee to show the progression of maturity in To Kill a Mockingbird as well as innocence in a world of evil. To start, Scout starts the Bildungsroman at six years old and grows older as the book advances. On page 330, Scout learns about Adolf Hitler from her teacher and states, “I went away, not sure that I could explain to Atticus what was on my mind, not sure that I could clarify what was only a feeling. Perhaps Jem could provide the answer. Scout is beginning to ask questions about the world she lives in, which is a dominant sign of maturity. Moreover, Scout is also used by Lee to display purity and innocence. On page 205, Scout courageously questions, “‘Don’t you remember me, Mr. Cunningham? I’m Jean Louise Finch. You brought us some hickory nuts one time, remember?’” What Scout doesn’t see is that Mr. Cunningham was planning to attack someone with a large group of men. As a result, she acts like herself, in her virtuous character, preventing the attack. The story as a whole is filled with injustice, such as racism, discrimination, or sexism. For the most part, Scout is oblivious to this at first but begins to confront these issues. Given these points, Harper Lee symbolizes Scout as a dynamic, maturing character who’s innocent among inequalities.

Harper Lee is portraying Tom Robinson as the Mockingbird in To Kill a Mockingbird. In To Kill a Mockingbird it is stated that it's a sin to Kill a Mockingbird because Mockingbirds do no harm, similar to Tom Robinson. It is stated in To Kill a Mockingbird that “ Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don't eat up people's Gardens, don't nest in corn cribs, they don't do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. That's why it's a sin to Kill a Mockingbird”. I do believe that Tom Robinson is the Mockingbird in the story because of the things he does and his personality. Tom Robinson is a man who doesn't do any harm and instead does Good by helping others when they need it, he doesn't attack people or do anything that hurts people in any way. That is why I think Harper Lee is portraying Tom Robinson as the Mockingbird in To Kill a Mockingbird.

Atticus is seriously determined to make the point clear that Mayella Ewell is the criminal. Lee is stating equal rights and determination through Atticus in this whole story.

Lee is stating how harmful society can be to those who's views on the world are still developing. Scout is a young girl in Maycomb who's perception of people can be easily constructed. What she witnessed at the court is more than enough for her to make up an idea of the type of person Mayella Ewell is. Scout knows that Tom Robinson is an innocent man who has been accused of a terrible crime. Although we can see that there are many factors as to why Mayella Ewell has come forward with the false accusation, it is hard for someone so young to grasp the layers underneath people's actions. It is reasonable to believe that Scout views Mayella as a criminal on top of being a horrible person.

I believe Mayella Ewell is both a victim, and a criminal. The argument of Mayella being either innocent or guilty can vary but I believe both arguments are valid because of many reasons. I believe this because I think that Mayella is being abused by her father and believes that her life is endangered and in order to protect herself from her father she accuses Tom Robinson of ---- to make it seem her father in innocent and so her father would not harm her. Mayella is both innocent because she needed a way to protect herself from her father, but also a criminal for falsely accusing a man of ----.

Aiden Quigley, Per 3 Riedmiller

In the novel, they show Tom Robinson as a bad man. He is described as an unfair justice black man who got discriminated against in court. In this time period that the novel took place, there was a lot of racism directly towards colored people. While he is in court for his trial, he tells the truth about everything but no one seems to believe him. The text states, "she told me to use the chair, and as I was reaching, she turned the chair around and jumped on me. She hugged me round the waist, and I could escape." This show how Tom Robinson was explaining the whole complete true story in the trial but no one believed him.
