“Rehearsal starts before the downbeat.” Mrs. Kristin Meyer is always adamant about her rehearsal times despite her welcoming personality. Being head orchestra director of the Glenbrook Music department, Meyer logically plans each rehearsal and time that she puts into each piece we rehearse and perform. I am so lucky to have such an inspiring woman be my director and I look forward to pursuing my music education degree even more now! My admiration for Mrs. Meyer stemmed into a curiosity conversation interview surrounding her involvement in music. As the interview continues, she addresses the importance of starting a rehearsal on time, but making it a safe space to allow a rehearsal to run so efficiently.

Mrs. Meyer has been such a great influence and mentor to me through her teaching as well as her personality. Mrs. Meyer is one of the greatest directors and people I’ve had the pleasure of meeting. Being the director of the Glenbrook Symphony Orchestra, I wanted to ask her a few questions such as: Who/What inspired you to become an orchestra director and musician? What are some advantages/disadvantages to conducting a band vs. and orchestra vs. and symphonic orchestra? What have you learned from teaching at both GBS and GBN? Do you transfer your techniques and build off them when teaching between both schools?

I interviewed Mrs. Meyer on April 11, 2018. This was her teaching day at GBS, so I had to work with her schedule to clarify what days she could be interviewed. She constantly managing her time at both schools, so that Wednesday, she was teaching at South. It really inspires me how she builds her ideas off of each school and critiques her teaching on a daily basis.

I hoped to gain more knowledge about the whole process of being a music director as well as learn about what some things to be aware of when conducting for different ensembles. As I pursue my dream of becoming a music director/woodwindtechnician, I wanted to get as much knowledge as I could. I knew immediately who I wanted to interview for these types of questions. Mrs. Meyer is so hard-working and efficient during rehearsals. She’s so compassionate and sweet and I really admire her work ethic. I aspire to follow in her footsteps and teach students and inspire them as much as she has inspired me.

Curiosity Conversation: Reflection

After interviewing Mrs. Meyer, I had some final thoughts about the curiosity conversation that we shared. Our main topic for the conversation was discussing the difference between band vs. orchestra: conducting techniques, musicianship, etc. This conversation made me even more excited to major in music education in the fall. I received some very valuable advice and ideas that, I know, will be helpful in my musical future. Mrs. Meyer even gave general tips about teaching! Hearing it from the teacher’s perspective, teaching in a classroom is something I really aspire to do as a career. If not teaching, then a position within a school. I really admired the way Mrs. Meyer took pride in teaching students. She talked about how they inspire her to teach and improve her teaching techniques on a daily basis. I want to learn more about education and how to teach as proficiently and easily as she does. As I major in music education, I want to be as open and friendly with my students, and reference her teaching style within my own. Mrs. Meyer is a great teacher and I wish to follow her success as a music educator and person.
