This also allows viewers to engage with the artwork, making it more interactive and enjoyable.

In final books, these colored transparent sheets could perhaps be designed to be rotatable, allowing viewers to combine all the color blocks into black. This would create a sense of interaction for the viewer.

But I also realized that the image of the Black person in the artwork carries some stereotypes and might lead to misunderstandings from the audience. My focus should be on skin color, so I should draw a person without distinct racial features.

It’s the first time I’ve learned about this group of women. Born into poverty, they got married and had children at a young age, following the norms of the time. They spent their days working,farming or managing household chores. Yet, as they made quilts to solve the practical problem of staying warm, they unlocked their creativity and became artists. I really admire the bold contrasts of vibrant colours and the harmony in their combinations—it feels so full of life.

“I’ve never liked those quilt patterns some people have in books. Too many fiddly little bits. I prefer big blocks and long strips. Whatever they look like, I enjoy sewing them together. I work it out, figure out how to put it together properly, a bit like solving a puzzle. You pick out the right colours, shapes, and fabrics. I stuck to my original idea: old clothes I could tear up. It’s always horizontal.”

The bright, vibrant colors clash in a way that breaks the monotony of traditional home decor, bringing endless energy and joy to the space.

Initially, they used natural earth tones like black and white, constructing precise geometric patterns to convey their messages. Over generations, their style evolved into a system of five colors: black for the spiritual world, white for purity, red for passion and strength, yellow for fertility and hope, and green for land and agriculture. Mothers would pass down the technique of painting geometric symbols on house walls to their daughters. While many saw these as mere decorations, they were, in fact, a coded language to transmit cultural heritage.

Esther Mahlangu began learning this craft at the age of 10 from her mother and grandmother, mastering both painting and traditional beadwork. She innovatively transferred these tribal visual elements from walls onto cars, bottles, British Airways airplane tails, and designer handbags. Notably, she became the first African woman to paint a BMW Art Car, bringing Ndebele art to a global audience.

Her creations are visually striking, with patterns, distorted text, a spectrum of colours, rough brushstrokes, and blocks of colour, as well as structural collages that tear and reassemble. Poverty, racism, and war were recurring themes in her art.

She believed that her liberal views were fundamentally part of the Christian message. However, her religion required her to obey rules, and the church hierarchy condemned her artistic work. Despite this, Kent’s art was filled with love and hope. She combined her artistic talent with her faith, aiming to use the power of art to change society. Her works were not only an artistic expression but also a call to action and attention to societal issues.

I believe the joy in her work was that she gave this grey world a gift of joy and colour.

What I found most rewarding in this class was that the teacher encouraged me to imagine the scent, personality, living environment, and stories behind these artifacts. This was a fascinating approach that allowed me to see them from a new perspective, making everything instantly more interesting.

The next page is a photo of Lena from Playboy. Lena is considered the ‘Shirley’ of the computer imaging world because a research institute used her image to test a new image compression algorithm. They used the portion of the photo above her shoulders, which eventually led to the JPEG format.

This is also my first time trying to visualize text, and it’s been a really interesting experience. It’s challenging to maintain the objectivity of the podcast while adding my subjective interpretation, but I think it will help the audience better understand the content of the podcast. However, I feel there are some shortcomings. The handwritten fonts in the book are a bit too casual, and the layout could be improved. Some of the fonts and patterns don’t blend as well as they could.

During this museum project, from finding inspiration in the museum to designing my own ceramic figures, I also learned how to extract elements that genuinely interest me from existing artworks and integrate them with my own ideas and experiences. This process not only allowed me to add more value and excitement to the original artwork but also made me more mindful of the audience’s experience and engagement.
