My Thoughts

This was quick online quiz I found randomly- I am not completely shocked. I am upset by it because it shows that even someone who doesn't "expect" to have a huge ecological food print is still making a dent in the health of our planet. Recently I've been thinking a lot about food and the planet as well as the ways I can make better choices. That being said most of the food I purchase is from Fresh Co where I can get affordable produce that is often shipped to Canada and uses a ton a carbon emissions. I have smaller produce markets as well as a coop near where I live that always seem to feel inconvenient. Which I know isn't exactly a good enough reason.
On a more macro level governments should be using policy to allow for more local initiatives to have funding and seriously look at the way our food systems are monopolized by huge food processing and grocery corporations for profit which could mean a difference in food security, affordability and impact on our planet.

The guilt I feel over MY FOOT PRINT and other less eco friendly choices have a lot to do with individualism. As we have spoken in past classes the neoliberal narrative of individual duty and our personal role in the environment crisis have a long and sad history of removing responsibility from governments and large corporations. Instead as people we are taught from a young age that fixing the planet is as easy as changing the lightbulbs we use. Even the quiz above in a way points to the individual and how we can make lifestyle changes as a meaningful action. Rather powerful governments and corporations need to be help responsible. Industries need to to be regulated rather than given free reign.

I think it has become apart of collective awareness in recent years that the effort to work on the planet needs to be a joint effort one that does not just help the most privileged feel better about themselves but seeks to learn, work with and bring power to communities that are most effected by climate injustice and environmental racism. This requires action globally and policy changes, drastic change, and accountability for corporations working within and outside of Canada and the democratization of power. moving away from centralized power to one that is equitable and equal.

The result are large disruptions such as the case of London in April of 2019 in which members of the rebellion took to the city streets to make demands for restructuring of state apparatuses. While the group advocates for non violence this does not necessarily mean their actions are legal. They offer various levels of engagements when it comes to supporting the cause and not all 'rebels' are required to break the law.
Some past Demonstrations have included: Sit in, flash mob, parades and marches.

A lot of the social justice commitments I have made in the past have been individual. I think a paradigm shift is needed for many people to see that climate justice requires collective action and education. We cant simply rely on the system to do the change for us because it has not and will not without pressure. Changing lightbulbs, cutting out one meal of meat a week, recycling, cutting down shower time, the list goes on, I believe these are important as they mean you are participation in the movement. However as both of the climate movements mentioned here show, the system needs an overhaul and the status quo will not do it.
We need Policy, leadership and collaboration that actively addresses environmental issues and takes communities into account.
That being said talk is cheap and I feel disappointed in myself for my lack of involvement which has been limited to a few petitions and a march when I was in university. As I have become more aware of the movements , practices and organizing that is being done.
In the next column I have put two ways I can become more involved with in the next 6 months.
