In my opinion, I think that the Canadian solders were in fact fighting and while they  might not have been progressing at a fast pace, they were not "dodging" any fight. It unfairly labels Canadian soldiers as being D-Day Dodgers. A “dodger” is someone who avoids something. The soldiers in Italy felt that their sacrifices were being ignored after the invasion of Normandy. A D-Day Dodger is someone who was supposedly avoiding real combat by serving in Italy, but this was very far from the truth. 
In my opinion, I do not think that the Canadian soldiers were actively trying to avoid D-Day. The conflict that they were a part of was real, just as D-Day. The song depicts the Canadians as happy and whoever wrote the song seems to be annoyed that the Canadians would come to Rome after invading Italy and being all cheerful. I think that the song is mocking the Italians that are saying the Canadians didn't want to fight in a 'real war'. The Canadians fought a real war an experienced both victory and death in great amounts in their time in Italy. It seems that the Italians were trying to belittle the efforts of the Canadians by presenting the idea that they stayed in Rome to avoid further conflict. One line that made it apparent that this song was mocking the Italians was "On our way to Florence, we had a lovely time. We drove a bus from Rimini, right through the Gothic Line". This line is sarcastic about the fact that it was not just as easy as riding a bus and going through the various defence lines set up by Germany throughout the country. These lyrics undermine the importance of the work that was done in Italy and focuses more on the relaxed part of the war. I would not say they were avoiding fighting in D-Day, but had a different approach, they were on campaign in italy, fighting some of the toughest battles. The D-Day dodgers experience was anything but easy, it's D-Day and Normandy that typically get the headlines, but as we see, The D-Day dodgers played a vitally important role in the defeat of fascism.
