Señor Sequera was very enthusiastic and always willing to help when I or any student needed assistance. Every day during the week he would always have an announcement on upcoming assignments and any updates that we needed to be aware of. Also in the announcements, he would provide different videos and pictures related to the content that we learned throughout the course that was very helpful.

Things I did to help better learn Spanish was I set about an hour per day to look over my vocabulary and grammar notes and complete my given assignments for the week. I also made sure to take very organized and detailed notes that I could understand and that greatly helped me to improve my Spanish. To improve my own Spanish learning in the future would be to look up different quick Spanish videos that go over different grammar concepts and vocabulary.

I liked the way the notes were set up. There would be culture notes at the beginning of all the notes that provided some fun facts about Spain and I thought that it was fun and interesting to read about. The notes provided the vocabulary first along with a helpful video that would go over the words and helped with pronunciation. After the video, there would be different games and activities to help me to learn the vocabulary. Then there would be the grammar notes. I think that the grammar notes were very helpful and it provided a clear explanation of the grammar concepts that were being presented along with plenty of sample sentences that helped when I was working on any writing assignments. There was little to nothing that I didn’t like about the course. I think that all the assignments were able to be completed in a timely manner and were effective in my learning. Also, the workload was manageable and never overwhelming.

We have learned elements of a language in a different teaching/learning style than you may be used to. Talk about your experience with learning Spanish in an online class.

Learning Spanish in an online class was a very different and new style for me. At first, I found it difficult to learn on my own since there was no teacher in person but after a while, I finally got to used to teaching myself Spanish. In the beginning, it was difficult to set a standard schedule of when I would complete all my assignments during the week but I sat down and assigned certain hours of the day to work on Spanish. Taking an online was difficult at times but I think it was still effective as being an actual physical class.

If I continue to study and learn the Spanish language I would like to learn more tenses since I know that there are quite a few and I want to learn them to make my speaking and writing more interesting and elaborate. I would also like to learn a larger and more extensive vocabulary in Spanish. I would also like to learn about the future tense to be able to describe what I plan to do in the future’s time.

One of the most interesting and exciting thing about Spanish culture was learning about the different foods within Spanish culture. I primarily eat Asian and American food but I am always open to new types of food and dishes that I have never eaten before. I really want to try authentic Spanish food and hopefully, I can one day if I ever go to Spain. The different types of dances and music in Spanish culture were very interesting to learn about as I have not been very exposed to much Spanish music. I looked up the flamenco and it is a very fun and entertaining style of music and dance.

What differences have you seen between the Spanish language and your native language?

One of the most noticeable differences between Spanish and English is the noun/pronoun and adjective agreement. In Spanish, the adjective must match the noun so if the noun is feminine the adjective must also be feminine. In English, we do not have to match masculine or feminine nouns with feminine or masculine verbs. Another concept that differs between the Spanish and English language is that adjectives in Spanish come after the noun. In English adjectives always come before the noun. In Spanish, no possessive nouns exist unlike in English. For example, in English we would say “Adam’s hat” but to express it in Spanish you would have to say “the hat of Adam” instead. A small difference between Spanish and English is punctuation. In English, we only use one exclamation point while there is an upside down exclamation point at the beginning of a phrase in Spanish followed by a regular exclamation point. Months and days of the week are also not capitalized in Spanish.

After completing the Spanish II course I now am able to talk about my school, family, hobbies, apartment, experiences in Spain, and my hobbies and food. For example, I can talk about my day at school in Spain and what I bought for the first day of school. I can also talk about the different classes I have at school. I can talk about these concepts in the basic present tense and in the imperfect and preterite past tenses. I now also know how to use reflexive verbs to describe my actions. I also have learned how to use direct object pronouns in my Spanish writings. I am able to describe how different places and events were in the imperfect and preterite tenses.
