This is a simile where Esch’s mother’s eyelashes are compared to a Venus flytrap.

This is a simile in which Esch’s mother’s touch to her neck is compared to the steadying of a dog, rather than the comforting of her daughter.

Flashback (how her mother described a hurricane) The italics are used to reference something that her mom once said and in turn we are led to believe that Esch feels closer to her mother now more than ever through this traumatic event that her mom has lived through (both a hurricane and pregnancy). 

Simile (describing the wind/Camille) The winds themselves are being compared to trains and the winds of the hurricanes have carried debris in every direction much like trains carry people and cargo to their desired destinations.
