Warhammer or more specifically Warhammer 40,000 is a universe of fiction. It was the brainchild of a small company by the name of GamesWorkshop. Originating as a board game, the first books detailing the universe were introduced in 1987, novellas, comics, and countless book series have been published since. Thousands of books have been made in the decades between the birth of 'forty-kay' and now, some taking place thousands of years before or after other series, but still being grounded in the same universe.

(Enlarge the PDF for a short Collage of artwork based in the Universe.

Nerds. put simply. While the term lacks the weight it did in years past, it's the most fitting for those with too much time on their hands, and an urge to absorb useless information. To those familiar with being 'nerdy', that's all part of the fun. If you're looking for the be-all-end-all universe for mountains of detail, nuance, creativity, and pointless trivia, look no further. As someone who's taken a delve into the universe myself, I can only say I've scratched the surface of the deep sea of books and lore written about the universe. Despite four years of being a part of the community, I can tell you with certainty it's impossible to know everything about this universe, at least not without a lifetime's worth of reading. Myself and those In the community I'm involved with love this aspect to death. It allows us and those who are interested to picture a universe genuinely larger than you can comprehend. one so large its 'facts' are subject to interpretation, and ends up being one of the most surprising settings to explore the human condition out of any series I've known.

So what's the Problem?

While the amount of lore may seem appealing to myself and others of similar impulse, it's shown to intimidate or otherwise disinterest people that first get word of it. And it's difficult to say they're not justified. The basic timeline of the universe takes roughly an hour to explain while including all of the important details. Most if not everyone isn't pleased with the idea of doing research into a universe you hardly know, much less know enough to enjoy. Because of this, the 'retention' of people showing interest is fittingly low. This is why forty-kay remains niche despite it having more of a fleshed out universe than most modern flagships like star-wars, lord of the rings, etc. So what separates this universe from the others? Media. Not the media you associate with news or politics, but modern media. Popular artwork, films, music, and everything else that gets people's attention. And only in Recent years has forty-kay been able to get enough revenue to start producing content branching from novels and books.

Get the word out so to speak, create a digital platform for people to discover and grow their own interest in the universe. One that comes in the forms of animations, music, and other media that really helps new people grasp what the universe is about. GamesWorkshop, the company responsible for the universe, is still transitioning its business model to a more modern platform, but already we're beginning to see the new type of content that catches eyes. While small, the standing community is starkly loyal and incredibly creative. More and more content creators are publishing works based on the universe that, some rivaling that of art pieces, and GamesWorkshop has given them the opportunity to continue their work. If the company is to continue investing in new creators and spreading new media such as the video below, I'd say it's only a matter of time until forty-kay makes itself much more prevalent.

(The following animation could be a bit dark for most, which is an aspect of forty-kay as a whole. Grimdark as it's called, working off of the more brutal aspects of fantasy universes.)
