- Language barriers -> Online language courses

- Economic constraints -> Reduced rates for Alliance incoming students for a BIP (University residences, University restaurants)

- Complicated administration -> better coordination between mobiltiy offices, framework agreements

- Peripheral cities -> boosting mobility though the Alliance, making appealing the mobility to an Alliance university (incentives, interesting programmes, connected with the specificities of the University and/or the territory)

Complicated administration => multilateral agreement among partners, Mobility Sub-Board having a monthly meeting

Accessibility => short mobilities for under-presented groups e.g. PhD students, students with medical condition, student with families, disciplines that do not have "a culture of internationalisation" etc.

Financial barriers => EC2U Alliance has allocated short mobility funds for its activities in the Work Plan. They are a bit higher than Erasmus grants.

Peripheral cities =>IROs doing extensive marketing for the partner universities, which all have a high quota for mobilities in the multilateral agreement. In addition, all the partners organise events so short mobilities might lead to a longer mobility.

EUNICE Ambassadors

At UPHF, we currently have one teacher as part of our EUNICE office whose mission is to make EUNICE more visible and well-known among students. We are planning to meet all pedagogical supervisors from each faculty to recruit even more ambassadors. The challenge is that we first need to convince teachers and staff so that they can, in turn, convince the students and boost their engagement.

One task of the EUNICE project is dedicated to increasing student engagement. The work package/task coordinator works hand in hand with two students (we have two students per partner university representing their respective institutions) to organize events and implement initiatives aimed at boosting student engagement.

The primary target audience for the toolkit is the administrative staff and service providers of all institutions within the Arqus alliance, who are involved in designing and delivering student services.

It seeks to streamline access to student services, identify and address barriers, and facilitate the sharing of best practices to improve service delivery and student satisfaction.

UniTo and USMB share a best practice of professors representing the alliance in their faculties, by helping spreading the news about alliance initiatives among students, professors, reasearchers and by collecting proposals, ideas, complaints in the faculties to be transmitted to the UNITA office

Our Alliance has a Student Board composed of 1 or 2 representative students from all 8 partners. The Student Board has the right to give 1 vote during the Steering Committee meetings for decision-making and to submit their own proposals to the Steering Committee.

PIONEER Alliance

In our PIONEER Council, every institution has the right to have two student representatives in it (10partnersx2representatives). They also have regular meetings with staff and teacher representatives, and they are able (and expected) to provide suggestions and advice on papers, documents, and/or processes. There is also the possibility to create ad hoc groups of students (and/or staff and teachers) to address specific or emerging topics (such as housing, etc.). We are trying to engage students in creating alliance results by asking for their opinions (surveys, invitations to meetings...), involving them in the creation process, encouraging their participation, and finding resources to fund their travel to conferences and student assemblies (such as EUSAF, etc.).

EU-CONEXUS: visits to faculties

At the beginning of each new semester, the EU-CONEXUS staff team and student ambassadors visit all university faculties to promote and disseminate information about courses, initiatives, events, and mobility opportunities available to students and also TEACHERS.

The dissemination process usually takes around 1–2 months in order to properly introduce the university services and opportunities to both new and current students, staff and researchers.

EU-CONEXUS: Student Congress and Festival 2025

EU-CONEXUS organised a Student Congress and Arts & Culture Festival in Cyprus. During the event, students not only had fun and enjoyed activities such as snorkeling, excursions, and cultural experiences, but also actively participated in a congress focused on student involvement and new initiatives within the alliance.

Throughout the congress, students from different universities formed international teams and developed project ideas aimed at improving student engagement and collaboration across EU-CONEXUS. As a result, at least three student projects later received funding of up to €10,000 to implement their ideas.

EU-CONEXUS Ambassadors

Every year, we organise a contest to select EU-CONEXUS ambassadors at each university within the alliance, creating an active international ambassador network. Most ambassadors are representatives of local student boards or active students who are interested in the alliance and its activities.

We engage ambassadors by involving them in the organisation of activities, dissemination events, and teambuilding initiatives. They also play an important role in helping us better understand students’ needs and expectations, while promoting EU-CONEXUS opportunities within their universities. We always consult them before making any decision related to the students.

EU-CONEXUS Student Board

Student Board consists of 2 students per university + 2 Joint Master students. Its president participates and votes in Governing Board and Executive Council meetings, while there are also representatives in Research and Academic councils with the voting rights. Student Board is often asked to share their opinion and ideas.

EU-CONEXUS Calls for student projects

There are calls for student projects where students can win from 5 to 15k for project implementation if their project is selected. Every call has a different topic they have to relate to, write the project application and budget in detail and find partners from other universities in order to implement it. Quite successful and attractive initiative for students.
