Since the dawn of the United States, Christianity, and politics have gone hand in hand. This can be viewed through the rhetoric of founding doctrines expressed by the Puritan branch of Christianity, as governor of the Massachusetts Bay colony John Winthrop (1630) wrote, "We are Commanded this day to love the Lord our God, and to love one another to walk in his ways and to keep his Commandments and his Ordinance, and his laws". Winthrop calls on his fellow colonists to act under God's commandments. Nearly 400 years later, the presence of Christianity in politics has not strayed, yet it has become more secretive. Most lawmakers vote with their religious preferences in mind, "Religious beliefs are statistically significant in their influence on legislative behavior" (Arnon 2018). While at its core, positive values that coincide with Christianity can be beneficial, the conjunction between Christianity, politics, and social standards that perpetuate discriminatory policies has proven to be disastrous. This ultimately calls for a holistic analysis of the influence of Christianity on LGBTQ+ Americans' lives.

American social norms influenced by Christianity have plagued politics contributing to discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community. From the analysis of Supreme Court rulings and anti-LGBTQ+ laws, it's evident in most cases the Christian religion has encroached on LGBTQ+ freedom. Yet, the United States government prioritizes the First Amendment right to freedom of religion over the Fourteenth Amendment right that vaguely protects LGBTQ+ people. Allyship can indirectly mitigate this problem, but not fully erratic it.
