Carved was my favorite poem, I found the others quite interesting but they had parts that I disagreed with. Furthermore I liked the overall explanation of the degradation of society that was explained in carved. I also understand the pure frustration and even anger that the author has at the world as I share a lot of it. The wording of the poem is fantastic and allows the feelings the be communicated in the clearest of ways, especially at the end. I think this poem was written by a student as these ideas and the style of writing is so reflective of my thoughts I find it hard to believe that it wasn't. A combination of all these things allowed the poem to be one that I could relate to and understand making it my favorite.

I think that Breathe worked best as a poem. Although I did not agree with the final few lines of the poem, I thought it was a masterpiece of writing. The literary devices used to immerse the reader in the emotions being communicated were utilized perfectly. The use of imagery allows the readers to visualize the overwhelming emotions and allows the audience to relate to the author. The anaphora shows how powerful the words are and how they have such strong meanings

I think the topic of the poem is very hard to explain, and the author used many literary devices to effectively showcase it. I just really love the messy way in which it is written, and I think it is a very beautiful poem.

In my opinion, the poem 'Breathe' worked best. I think the way in which it was written is very clever. The poem is about negative thoughts and anxiety in general. The author used long sentences with many verbs (I’m panting and sweating and shaking and crying and feeling the numbness slowly slide its way towards my feet and my hands and I want to escape), and this gave the poem a messy and chaotic feel that I think was intentional. By using free verse, the author showcased the thoughts that go through someones head when they feel anxious. They did this in a way that they hooked the readers, and made us feel as if we too were feeling anxious. I also think that the author beautifully used repetition and imagery to enhance the reader's experience. All of these literary devices gave the poem deeper meaning and helped express the author's message very well.

This was my favorite poem because it explains well what this person had to experience through metaphors and uses them to convey a message that the poet can only understand. They include emotion, although in a way that is detached and distant from the reader. Especially how it is a topic that can often be blurry, messy, and hard to explain, as well as traumatic, the poet makes the reader understand their situation in a way that is adaptable to many people, taking a difficult situation and morphing it to relate to peoples everyday life.

I engaged with this poem when reading it because I strongly agree with the message it was trying to convey and was able to read it in a rhythm which brought more meaning to the poem. I can also somewhat relate to this poem because there are also things in life that I look to achieve. Furthermore it addresses important issues in society like depression on teenagers and that gives the poem factuality.

"The Snake" was very well written in terms to writing structure as it used many metaphors and a composition that is common in poems. The repetition shows urgency, or the frequency of these actions or thoughts in the poets life. The poet also looks at many different perspectives as well to try to embody the situation and make sense out of it through a outsiders perspective. It also gives the reader better angles and more opportunity to relate to the poem to draw the reader in. They also don't speak in a manner that is too submissive, but powerful, yet, maintaining composure, as well as using dialogue and phrases or words the the reader can use daily, bringing a sense of reality into the poem. Overall, I enjoyed this poem because of the connections it makes with the outside world to accommodate the reader in a situation that they might not be familiar with.

I got lost a bit towards the end when reading and could not quite get what it was communicating but the structure helped tie the poem together. There was also a rhythm that I found when reading, for example the word breathe was repeated and I noticed that there was a caesura after the words breathe because there seemed to be an obvious pause.

I liked breathe the best, the repetition of the word breathe was like writer reminding themselves to breathe as they wrote their personal issues and turned it into a poem including the questions she/he had which showed the constant anxiety they felt. While much of the poem sounded like a constant self reassurance, the way it was written reassured the reader as well that the anxiety they feel can be made so much better by a single deep breath. However it wasn't only anxiety the writer felt as she concluded her poem saying that the words other say have huge influence despite how small the insult.

I think both of these are masterful pieces of poetry. Breathe perfectly uses repetition of different phrases(especially the word: "breath") and run on sentences to convey this state of overthinking and paranoia that is going on in the narrators head. In the case of The Snake, this poem uses rhyming in 2 great ways, first is when they are describing how everything feels from their perspective, the rhyming helps make it feel a bit disorienting since they use it in sort of a disorganised fashion and sometimes the words barely rhyme. Once the volta takes place in this poem, which is when she starts using second person perspective, it starts to feel empowering, since they are much more organised and the sound much more similar to each other than the rhymes before the volta.

In my opinion, this poem was written and expressed in a very elegant and peaceful way. The author put their thoughts and feelings into the poem and has blended it in very nicely. The usage of language was adequate and the repetition of the word "breathe" was a constant reminder to stay calm and process things with caution. But also a reminder to think before speaking as words can hurt more and stay with us forever. I think the message is clear in this poem and it is very calming to read.

A close runner up is Breathe, however, I think that the devices in that poem have been used to the same effect in numerous others. The Snake feels far more original since it uses literary devices to effects that I haven't seen them been used for before, this includes the rhyming. I also loved the use of the dad being a metaphorical snake, and how he is "poisoning" his child, this is a very creative way to convey your trauma since it does it through something that we would never want to happen to us, aka: a snake attack.

In my opinion short and simple poems can often be the better choice as the message is easier to transmitted and the reader is most likely to understand it. As I mentioned before, the repetition of the word "breathe" is a reminder to stay calm and process things before taking action. The more it keeps repeating the more the reader will stick to it. This already ensures the reader is paying attention. I think the way the poem was written was strategic and also very beautiful. Overall, I think this poem included the right information and was expressed in a harmonic way.

The snake comparison was good as it's well-used so everyone already knows what that means. The second someone is compared to a snake, we know they're manipulative or a predator of some sort. My favorite line is " Like the time you forgot, and you forget, and you’re forgetting" because of the repetition before and the helplessness the reader can feel through all of the last 4 lines.

I like this poem because in many ways it showed how common it is for people to have the same experiences in the mind. The use of repetition and volta all over the poem gave away the feeling you get when your thoughts take over and you feel out of control. An example of this in the the poem would be the repetition of the line "you have control" 3 times and transitioning into the line "I have total control". This ultimately enhances the poems message about loosing control over thoughts.

This poem used the main elements that are needed in order to give a clear message that can be understood, which were repetition and volta. For instance, the repetition of the word "breathe", an action we take in order to gather our thoughts to calm down, was used as a way for the poet to make us readers get the image or perspective of the tone that was set throughout the whole poem. As well, as the change in speed to show how it feels to be in panic when your thoughts take control over your mind. Therefore, this poem works well.

There's a clear theme and a wide social issue the poem is about, instead of a personal experience that only some can relate to. We're all living in the age where we can see how social media/technology is affecting society, so we understand what the poem is about and some may share the same opinions. The poem looks at multiple facets of life in this society (including marriage, something not mentioned by other social criticisms) and how it loops back to us becoming more reliant on technology than the real world resources or relationships we used to make use of. The poem knows what it wants to comment on and what themes to sprinkle in once or twice (Christianity, for example) to add a different perspective.

My favorite poem was "Breathe" because it seemed like a poem which was expressing what people may have thoughts about AS IF it were thoughts which people have. This was seen through the Volta and repetition used throughout the whole poem. The poet repeated the words "total control" multiple times in the first part of the poem. Then using volta, the poet changed the repetition of words to "why are we so stupid", and then once again changed it to "they dont understand". I really like how the poet used volta and repetition everywhere to express the thought process of many people.

Snake used a lot of unique terms (most of which related to snakes) along with the use of repetition, especially towards the end as we can see in the last 4 lines which all started with "like the time". Although the poem seems very vague and was hard for me to clearly understand the topic, I can understand that the poet is referring to something which happened to them in the past, hence the use of "like the time". I personally really like the line "Sometimes when I look at you, I picture myself being a statue " because it may be seen as; the fear the poet had of the person in subject made his figure so still it almost looked like a statue, or it may even be a reference to multiple fictional beliefs (although I cant name them) about when you look into a snake's eyes, you turn into stone.

When I started reading this poem it started talking about depression and wanting to fight but not really understanding what they are fighting for. I have met a couple of people who have depression or have had it and they have talked to me about not really knowing what they are fighting for because at the end of the day they’ll be dying anyway. I think many people that want to commit suicide have the mentality that I’m going to die anyway so why not do it now. End the pain today instead of waiting any longer. Therefore I think this poem is a good representation of what people might be going through lately.

I think breathe worked best. The term "Breathe" in and of itself acts as relief from the rest of the poem. In the first part of the poem, we go from small intervals between each "Breathe" to multiple long lines all at once, this builds up and gives readers the feeling of almost literal drowning during this extended spiel, the next breath acts as an escape from the tension. The second half of the poem switches between long and short lines to keep that relief going without the "Breathe". Over all an incredibly well done poem, however, the end of the poem is much weaker than the rest, it comes off as basic and bland after an incredibly strong opening and middle.

It showed us how not in control of herself she is. The repitition of the word breathe was also good because she is trying to find control in her breathing, but she can't. She has to repeat the word many times to try to gain control. I also feel like the poem is relatable. Sometimes it's hard to stay in control of your thoughts.

Encountering a snake is scary and being bitten is painful. They help us understand the hurt they feel from the abusive father.
The repatition in the last stanza of the phrase "the time you forgot that..." showed how many times the father forgot when he shouldn't have. The volta showed how first they were accepting and hiding from the pain, but then they were standing up for themselves and telling the father that he was wrong.

I liked the poem "Fight" the best. All the time, but especially in this past year, mental health needs to be discussed. This poem does so in a very powerful fashion. It is straight forward, and even intense, but it really shows the true sides of the struggles with depression that so many teenagers face. The author writes about how life can feel meaningless when death is the inevitable outcome.
"Do their work
Live for them"
represents how it can feel you are just a tiny piece in this huge puzzle that is a capitalist society where so many expectations have to be met. Sometimes those expectations can be hard to meet when struggling with mental health. The poem flows, and it asks questions which keeps the reader engaged, and it mentions dark subjects that must be understood and discussed if you want to work away from them. You have to except the fact that you are just a small piece in a huge society to in a sense "break free" from it to really start living for yourself, and not for anyone else. I also think that the way a poem ends really sets my thoughts for the whole thing. "Forget about life
Because tomorrow i'll be in heaven" is how the author decided to end this poem, and I think they made the right decision by being straight forward and honest. It is clear that the author has faced issues with mental health, and is working towards opening a discussion on an issue that is so evident among teenagers.

Carved talked about the social structure of society. that in itself if relatable because almost everyone is part of society. the way the poem is conveyed is what makes it work the best. the conceit at the beginning of the poem about the hollow tree was a very powerful way to start; and the other metaphors connected to it through out the poem makes it so he/she is conveying the message through two different ways. the way he starts and ends the poem is with an innocent character wanting or commenting about something this is a stark contrast between the message of the poem and the innocence of a person.

I think that breath worked really well because it frequently uses volta to switch up tones, and keep the poem at a fast pace. This switching between long lines and short shows how stressed the author is. The author also switches the tone for the last 3 lines, and makes it more directed at the audience. This format of drawing the reader in by showing the authors problems and then "blaming" the reader is very shocking which makes it effective, and it ends with the general message of being kinder.

breathe

I related the most with Breathe, this is my reason why it is my favourite. I felt as if I was getting so lost in the poem and then I read “breathe”, I take a calm breath and clear my mind, then carry on reading - the repetition of the word “breathe” must be my favourite part of the poem, I felt that I could relate to the author as I tell myself to breathe every time I get stressed or overwhelmed. The breath divides and distracts you for a second from the intensiveness of the poem, I feel as if this represents her life and how her breath is helping her get through it, this shows exactly how upsetting life is for the author because she cannot control her life and the repetition of breath indicates how she is trying to control her breathing but is struggling.

Breath is a nice poem because the person seems like they are undergoing a lot of stress. When the poem says. It was well structured and the way that it was written felt different. There are some lines where it could keep going but the author drops the last word to the next line, in my head I feel like that would have an echo after that word.
- Jordan
