I chose the city of San Francisco because I visited in April and witnessed firsthand the challenges it faces with homelessness and gentrification. I noticed that the further you travel from the downtown area, the more livable and well-maintained the city appears. This contrast made me curious about the urban planning projects currently underway to address these issues.

San Francisco planning officials released a revised draft zoning map that allows taller, denser housing in the underdeveloped north and west. The updated plan focuses on mid-rise development along commercial corridors and scales back some previously proposed high-rise zones. While pro-housing advocates see it as a step forward, critics argue it still favors developers and threatens neighborhood character.

I believe this zoning plan could benefit the community by creating more affordable housing and improving conditions in many San Francisco neighborhoods.

When I look at this matter of Urban Planning happening in San Francisco and the points made in this Padlet I think this is a step in the right direction as it seeks to add affordable housing in an area that is being heavily affected by gentrification and rising housing prices. I believe that if this development incorporates walkability, public transportation, accessibility, as well as taking into account the communities needs, this will be a successful and beneficial plan.
