Korean Beauty Trends Go Global as ‘Hallyu’ Sweeps the Western World

The market for Korean beauty products in the west has experienced rapid growth recently, driven by influencers and Korean beauty retailers targeting the western market. This comes amidst a wider phenomenon known in South Korea as ‘Hallyu’ - the export of Korean culture to the wider world.

02 September 2019 / CA, USA /

Over the past few years, South Korea’s cultural economy has seen a surge in global popularity. Thanks to the meteoric rise in popularity of South Korean media - like K-pop and K-dramas - across the world, South Korea has successfully crafted a lucrative new industry around ‘exporting’ their pop culture to the world. Korea’s cultural globalization has been so dramatic that it’s even been given a name, ‘Hallyu’.

And it seems we can now add beauty products to the list of South Korea’s cultural exports. Over the past few years, the beauty industry has experienced a revolution driven by South Korea as beauty trends from the country are coming over to the west. In 2017, the beauty industry in South Korea had already grown to an estimated worth of over $13 billion.

Korean beauty trends and ideals are very different than we’d traditionally find in the west. For example, South Koreans pay much more attention to skincare products. In Korean culture, children are taught to look after their skin from a very young age - and they take this very seriously.

It’s usual for Koreans to have a robust skincare routine that they work through before even putting on makeup. The whole skincare regime usually ranges from 7 to 12 steps, and products that use natural ingredients are preferred. Koreans try to take care of their skin rather than use foundation to cover up blemishes.

Now, these trends are moving over to the west. Data shows that 13% of 10 to 17-year-old girls in the US want to try K-beauty products, and 18% of 18 to 22-year-old women have already used K-beauty products at least once.

The growth in popularity amongst young people is no doubt due to the impact of digital marketing. The growth of ‘K-beauty’ influencers like Joan Kim and Edward Avila, who make regular YouTube videos about K-beauty that see millions of views, has generated a surge in interest in younger consumers.

Also at the forefront of this new trend are Asian beauty brands and retailers, which have increased efforts to sell their beauty cosmetics and skincare products in western markets.

Websites like Asian Beauty Wholesale sell Asian cosmetics wholesale products from Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and other territories to retailers and consumers in the west. As more and more distributors start targeting the western market, expect these products to become even more readily available.

Source: Asian Beauty Wholesale

Cosmetics conglomerate Estee Lauder is set to take over its first Asian beauty brand next year

Hong Kong /19th November 2019/

Next year, the huge cosmetics conglomerate company Estee Lauder will take over one of Korea's most popular skincare brands. The American company is set to purchase two-thirds of the shares in South Korean owned Have & Be Co. to make the company the first Asian beauty brand in its portfolio.

Estee Lauder already owned one-third of the Korean company, and now is planning to purchase the rest of the company in a full takeover bid.

Have & Be Co. is the parent company of one of Korea's most successful skincare brands Dr. Jart+. Dr. Jart+ is well known for making innovations in the skincare industry and making some of the most popular face masks, facial creams, and SPF products in Korea.

According to an Estee Lauder spokesperson, the Have & Be Co. purchase could bring as much as $500 million into the company in the company in the coming year.

Estee Lauder has long been known as a high-quality makeup and skincare brand, but after a dip in sales in recent years, the company has branched out and set about acquiring a plethora of popular brands. Some of Estee Lauder's most recent purchases include Bobbi Brown, Aveda and Too Faced. Have & Be Co. will be the Estee Lauder's first Asia based brand.

The company is increasing its efforts to stay on top of the cosmetics market and this wants to remain in the driving seat could explain the company's desire to purchase a Korean brand. In recent years, Korean cosmetics, and Asian beauty wholesale products have become increasingly popular in the west and this demand could be what drove Estee Lauder to make this expensive purchase.

Sites such as Asianbeautywholesale.com already allow people in the west to purchase brands like Dr. Jart+ online, but the recent purchase by Estee Lauder could mean that more Korean products are available in American high street stores and in the west in general.

Time will tell how this business move will work out for Estee Lauder, but it could open the flood gates for a wave of Asian cosmetics brands making their way into the western market.

Source: AsianBeautyWholesale
Contact: https://www.asianbeautywholesale.com/about-us/email-our-ceo.html
