One's life is not predestined; you are capable of becoming whoever you would like to be.

"The independent individual? Never heard of him. No such thing" (Rappoport 1).
The author is making the claim that the modern day definition of "freedom" does not encapsulate the needs of each person. Freedom only stems from certain groups wishing to gain more power, rather than individuals gaining more rights.

"Freedom," by George MIchael
The artist is claims that freedom comes from no longer having a reliance on other people/material items to feel joy. In the lines, "Sometimes the clothes do not make the man," George Michael is furthering his claim that possessions do not make someone who they are, it is the connections they make with one another that truly gives them their identity. The "ending vs. mending" struggle in BNW represents this issue.

I feel like the lyrics "Is take these lies and make them true somehow" relates to BNW because in the book the controllers basically lied to the people and told them they are free and made them believe that freedom is what was given to them by the controllers and they had to accept that as the truth.

The reason I think that he thinks freedom is just for politics is because in the article he states "We're supposed to believe it happens this way: A bunch of students sitting in a cafe suddenly go to their cell phones, pop over to Facebook, and say, "Hey, wanna be free?" And a Republic is born. Poof."

The George Michael song "freedom" was about how he was dealing with fame and how he has a lack of freedom now that he is (was) such a big artist. it relates to the book because they also have a lack of freedom but its for a different reason.

This contrasts BNW because in the book they say that everyone belongs to everyone. The idea of being an individual is shown through the lyrics of this song. Lines such as "you gotta give for what you take" explain how being an individual is about giving back what you take from others. George Michael is saying that to be an Individual ,you have to be looking past the materialistic society we live in, and be an individual.

We have the right to rebel and stand up for what we believe in. This gives us the freedom to do what we want.

"The independent individual? Never heard of him. No such thing." An individual is never free. Only the large society is because they have the freedom to gain power and force people to think certain ways

"I don't belong to you, and you don't belong to me." George Michael is saying that in a society that grants freedom, no one is greater than anyone else and everyone has the same rights. This is what we are striving for in modern society, but unfortunately that is not how to works. People are too greedy and take rather than give. In the Brave New World, this lyric does not apply because the caste system creates a hierarchy within the community. Epsilons are not given the same rights are Alphas and vice versa.

Freedom is being able to make decisions without outside influence. It is when you can choose whatever you want to do whenever you want. I think most people in America are truly free because we have lots of different choices to make and the opportunity to choose.

"Should the US government assist the people of Uganda in a true revolution for true freedom? That's asking a psychopath (the US government) to change its basic mindset because it's the right thing to do."
This quote is interesting as it shows an opposing view to nationalism and questions whether food charities are actually helping a country. Supporters of charities take pride in being "good" people when really they could be spending money to support corrupt governments. The federal government spends millions in foreign aid but does not support the rebels that are trying to obtain freedom themselves.

George Michael - Freedom:
I thought it was interesting how the lyrics said " You don't belong to me and I don't belong to you" because that is the polar opposite of Brave New World where everyone is brain washed into a "community." The idea of freedom being equal trade ("You gotta give for what you take") is a great point as many king or dictators in history always take more than they give, meaning their society is not free. Our country is great because everyone has equal rights under law, so at least people have some basic guaranteed freedoms.
