What is character design?

Character design refers to the process of creating characters for animated films, comics, TV, toys, and publications. A character starts off as a concept: a collection of personality traits, behaviors, and physical attributes. Then, the designer sketches the character or uses design software to bring the character to life in print, on screen, or as a physical object. - (What Is Character Design? + How to Get Started, 2023)

<sub>
What Is Character Design? + How to Get Started. Before they settled down Ahsoka’s name, her old original name was Ashla. Her old concept outfit was a long, pleated skirt. As we know Ahsoka now, her physical appearance and sense of fashion started to shift, into a fit of a shorter skirt and a tube top. Her facial markings were inflicted by San in Hayao Miyakaki’s Princess Mononoke.
(Knox, 2020)

How were they animated?

How George Lucas animated Ahsoka and the show was using a program called ‘Autodesk Maya Software’ .

Who designed the character?

The creator who designed Bluey is Joe Brumm. Joe Brumm worked as a lead animator for 10 years in London on numerous children’s series, including the Bafta-winning Charlie and Lola. He also worked in Kenya on Tinga-Tinga Tales for BBC/Disney. Joe Brumm wanted to create a show similar to Peppa Pig but wanted to create it as an Australian lifestyle.
(NPR, 2022)

How were they animated?

How Bluey was animated through a program called, Storyboards. The editors then cut these storyboards together into an animatic (flip-book style). After the editors put them into an animatic, some professional sound effects and music are added, along with the voices of the characters.
Bluey's team of talented artists and designers produce the final drawings of the characters, props, and backgrounds. From here, the drawings of each character are made into animated skeletons, called rigs. These rigs have controls on their faces and joints, and using these, the animators can make the characters laugh, run, and even wag their tails! It takes a team of animators four weeks to make one episode of Bluey.
(Yugire, 2022)

The overall aesthetic of the character

The aesthetic of Bluey in general is turning everyday family life into extraordinary adventures. The show's visuals, including animation and art direction, are beautiful. With overarching themes including a focus on family, growing up, and Australian culture, Bluey has received consistently high viewership in Australia and around the world.
Aesthetics and the beautiful background scenery have a painting-like composition and simple visual cues for the audience to shift into a new cinematic world of play. Art direction-wise, the joy of witnessing outfits for the fantastical character personas using craft materials.
(acmag, 2021)

2007 - REMY

WHO DESIGNED THE CHARACTER:

The character Remy from the movie "Ratatouille" was designed by Pixar Animation Studios. The team at Pixar, led by production designer Harley Jessup, worked on the design of Remy and other characters in the film. The animators and artists at Pixar put in a lot of effort to create the unique and expressive look of Remy, bringing the character to life on the screen. (“Ratatouille” Pixar Style: “Bon Appétit,” 2023)

HOW WERE THEY ANIMATED:

Remy was animated using computer-generated imagery (CGI) by the talented animators at Pixar Animation Studios. Ratatouille also excels in the area of color and design. Like all the Pixar films before it, it avoids the overtly saturated and segregated coloring, or unnaturally elastic character movements sometimes associated with computer-animated films, and instead boasts a visual look that resembles a well-photographed live action-film.

Getting to that point starts at the beginning of the filmmaking process while the characters and their environments are being conceived. It is a huge collaborative effort where the film’s production designer Harley Jessup and many other artists experiment with designs and color by creating both hand-made and computerized concept art. (Ratatouille, 2023)

OVERALL AESTHETIC OF THE CHARACTER:

Remy's aesthetic in "Ratatouille" showcases a combination of realism and anthropomorphism. He is portrayed as a small rat with a slender body, expressive eyes, and delicate features. His fur is rendered with detailed textures, reflecting the nuances of light and shadow. Remy's design incorporates elements of both rat-like characteristics and human-like traits, allowing viewers to connect with the character emotionally. The overall aesthetic captures the balance between realism and the whimsical nature of the story, making Remy a visually engaging and relatable character. (Ratatouille, 2023)

Who designed the character?

Miguel Rivera was designed by Daniel Arriaga. Miguel is a 12-year-old who struggles against his family’s generations-old ban on music. “Miguel secretly nurtures this love of music,” says director Lee Unkrich. “He’s constructed a guitar and designed it to mimic Ernesto’s iconic skull guitar. And he’s taught himself to play.”
(Pixar Animation Studios, 2020)

How were they animated?

How CoCo the film itself was animated by a 3D model by the technology of computer animation. For major characters in the film, Miguel, and Martinez both had dozens of drawings from every angle or even a clay sculpture to work off of. The shapes get layered together until each character has a realistic, complex silhouette. The process can take from two to six weeks per character.
(Pixar Animation Studios, 2020)

The overall aesthetic of the character

The aesthetic of Miguel is that his dreams are to become a musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. The music itself has been a part of Miguel's life for a long time, his family banned music for generations after the truth that has been discovered.

WHO DESIGNED THE CHARACTER:

MacKinnon and Saunders based their puppets on exquisitely detailed drawings by a young Belgian character designer named Félicie Haymoz. Anderson told Haymoz that Mr. Fox was to be a combination of Roald Dahl, Rex Harrison, George Clooney (who voices the character in the film), and “a stuffed fox.” - (Sancton, 2009)

HOW WERE THEY ANIMATED:

Once the master sculpt of a character was finished, a series of epoxy resin molds were taken from it to create a negative copy of the figure; the more protrusions and extremities on a character, the more complex the mold. “When we take the mold apart, the original sculpture inside is destroyed,” says Ian MacKinnon. “But hopefully by that point, it’s captured the [inverse] likeness of the original sculpt.”

Before they poured the liquid puppet flesh into the molds—foam latex for the animals, silicone for the human faces, giving them a slightly surreal translucence—MacKinnon and Saunders’s team constructed steel, ball-and-socket armatures, which are like articulated skeletons that allow the animators to control the characters’ movements with extreme precision.

These puppets have joints at almost every spot that we have joints, but their heads are especially complex; without organic facial muscles to contract, the puppet makers had to craft remarkably intricate and tiny mechanisms to contract the characters’ faces into various expressions - (Sancton, 2009)

OVERALL AESTHETIC OF THE CHARACTER:

"Fantastic Mr. Fox" embodies a distinctive aesthetic that merges Wes Anderson's signature visual style with the art of stop-motion animation. The film showcases meticulously crafted sets and puppets, featuring stylized characters with exaggerated features. The warm and earthy color palette, along with careful lighting and symmetrical compositions, creates a cozy and nostalgic atmosphere. This unique blend of meticulous details, vibrant colors, and Anderson's trademark visual sensibilities results in a visually captivating and whimsical experience. - (Sancton, 2009)

WHO DESIGNED THE CHARACTER:
Carlos Grangel once again being mentioned, since he's done so many movies and his style is so versatile

Carlos Grangel has been working as a Character Designer for the past 30 years, having helped design 18 feature films, including: The Prince of Egypt, The Road to El Dorado, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, Madagascar, Corpse Bride, Kung-Fu Panda, How to Train Your Dragon, Pirates, and Hotel Transylvania. - (CG Master Academy - Online Courses in Art, Games & VFX, 2023)

HOW WERE THEY ANIMATED:

Hiccup was primarily animated using computer-generated imagery (CGI) by the skilled animators at DreamWorks Animation. The animators brought Hiccup's movements, expressions, and interactions with the dragon and the environment to life through the use of advanced computer animation techniques.

Throughout the studio’s history, it’s relied on a custom piece of animation software named Emo. Originally developed in the 1980s by Pacific Data Images, Emo was designed to animate primitive graphics and text, but evolved into the kind of tool that could bring hiccup to life. Despite several major overhauls, however, it had begun to show its age. Animators would have to work with rough geometric approximations of creatures rather than fully-realized models, or turn off different body parts altogether to get the software to run at an acceptable speed. Which is why in the later movies they changed to another software completly. (Bishop, 2014)

OVERALL AESTHETIC OF THE CHARACTER:

Hiccup's aesthetic in "How to Train Your Dragon" portrays a distinctive and relatable character design. He is depicted as a young Viking with a lean physique, messy reddish-brown hair, and a slightly awkward appearance. Hiccup's design evolves throughout the film series, reflecting his growth and development as a character. His attire combines elements of Viking culture with a touch of inventiveness, highlighting his unique personality and resourcefulness. The overall aesthetic captures the blend of fantasy and adventure, presenting Hiccup as a relatable and endearing character within the film's immersive world. (Lestón, 2014)
