As a creative and musician, my inspirations come from a large variety of genres, accumulated through several years of versatility in artistic expression. The creatives I chose to represent my musical journey come from three different disciplines being Rap and Storytelling, Beatboxing, and Singing and Guitar.

Andre 3000

Andre 3000, one half of the hip-hop duo ‘Outkast’, was my first introduction to the involvement of technical music concepts in rap like Syncopation, Polyrhythms, and Rhyme Schemes. My personal cadence, scheme switches, and rap texturing is influenced by his ingenuity. The song ‘Aquemini’, by Outkast has a verse by him that directly fueled my love for songwriting. He stated in an interview “Feeling is my only barometer of what I'm doing” (GQ, 2023), which resonates with me a lot.

D-low

D-low is an English beatbox pioneer whose winner’s compilation video for the SBX Kickback Battle 2021, acted as a catalyst to my journey of exploring the artform. My beatbox sound kit consists of several bass and sub-bass techniques that are directly borrowed from his tutorials on YouTube. His deep melodic composition with the incorporation of vocals in his tracks influenced my own style of performance, and composition . “Allow space and time in the way you beatbox” (D-low, 2023).

Kaleo (JJ Julius Son)

Jökull Júlíusson is the lead vocalist of the Icelandic band 'Kaleo', his artistic choices vocally, and visual imagery filled lyrics, constitute a significant part of my music stylization. Their melodic guitar riffs even inspired me to pick up the instrument for the first time. The music video for the song ‘Save Yourself’ in 2016, performed on an Iceberg transformed my view on music expression, with the soft, melodic song performed in an ethereal looking scenery. (Ayers, 2016).

Rakim

Rakim, one half of the Hip-hop duo ‘Eric B. & Rakim’, is considered to be one of Andre 3000’s earliest influences. Andre mentions “He was the coolest, the calmest, and he showed that rap could be fluid, rather than just be a rhythmic attack” (Hodgkinson, 2006). Apart from his fluidity in his flows, Andre 3000 seems to have adopted a deep technical approach to his rapping much like Rakim, with multisyllabic rhyme schemes as well as adopting the art of storytelling within rap.

Zach de la Rocha (Rage Against The Machine)

Zach de la Rocha from ‘Rage Against The Machine’, seems to have inspired the creation of Outkast's Hit song B.O.B (Bombs Over Baghdad). Andre mentioned “I wouldn’t have done ‘Bombs Over Baghdad’ if it weren’t for Rage Against The Machine, because I felt urgency in their music, so I was like, How can I add urgency to what we’re doing?”(Broken Record Podcast, 2020). Furthermore Zach after listening to the track had remixed the song in his style, proving the influence had come full circle.

Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix, a prominent guitarist and artist in the 60’s, has influenced a major chunk of JJ’s and in turn Kaleo’s music with his vibrant guitar riffs, and soulful performances. Kaleo can be seen to use a bunch of ‘fuzz distortion’ in some of their tracks which Hendrix helped pioneer (Garratt & Garratt, 2017). Even the vocal content, with the raspy strains, and the panning of the guitars by JJ show incredible resemblance to Hendrix. The song Voodoo Child by Hendrix has an instrumental structure that strongly resembles Kaleo.

Beardyman

Beardyman is a beatboxer and musician from the UK, his performance was D-low’s first introduction to beatbox. Beardyman’s transition from beatbox to EDM music can be witnessed through D-low’s artistic progression from covering famous EDM tracks to creating his own Loop Station songs of the same genre. Both being UK beatbox champions from different generations, the similarities in style although little is very prominent in their approach to the artform. Both artists have transitioned from beatbox battling and have begun using it as an instrument to make music. “I picked it up as a hobby to start with and it has gone on from there. A performer called Beardyman inspired me” (D-Low, 2014).

Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson

Vilhjálmur Vilhjálmsson is an icelandic singer, popular during the 60’s. His influence on Kaleo is predominantly seen on the folk side of the band’s music, with sweet Icelandic vocals and local origin. Vilhjálmsson’s song ‘Vor í Vaglaskógi (Spring in Vaglaskógur)’, was renditioned as a cover by Kaleo as one of their first works, which gained popularity within Iceland as well as overseas spiraling the band into the success it is today. “I’ve always kind of loved the song growing up. So I did this kind of very different version of it” (Júlíusson, 2016)

Napom

Napom is an American beatboxer, who came up around the same time as D-low. Napom like D-Low has a ‘full’ sounding style with an envelope covering a large variety of lower frequencies making the beats sound heavier on stage speakers. His battle mentality, and stage presence is incredibly reminiscent of D-Low as they had built them together. The creative usage of the technique ‘Liproll’ is a major factor in the recognition of Napom which has been adopted by D-Low in his beats. “that's always been the paired fantasy to get to see D-Low versus Napom for a few years, kind of similar Liproll styles and just both been beatboxing at the top of our game” (D-Low, 2019).
