A union, in this context specifically a workers union, is a group comprised of workers, typically laborers and other blue collar careers, who join together to fight for their rights as workers.
Unions are broken into small groups based off their career and location, so laborers of a certain area can have their own specific union. Common Union demands include better pay, fair hours of work, and better conditions.

The union strikes resulted in several disputes between political parties, and the government. President Truman had lost support of the progressives due to his opposition towards unions and their demands. As a result, conservatives gained control of the senate. This was impactful because bill were able to be passed that prohibited strikes, and limited the power unions held. This has been now said to be a factor of the economy's stability in the next decade, the 50s.

During the war, the activities of organized labor were reduced by governmental restrictions and regulations. Labor and management had positive and negative effects from the increase in union membership. On the positive side, the sudden increase of new employees helped companies produce wartime products and increased membership helped unions strengthen their positions. And on the negative side, wartime loyalty was sometimes reduced by the tense of labor relations that derived from excessive government control during the war.
