The reason I had chosen this book is because of how many times I had seen the character, 'Count Dracula', but have no idea how the original story actually came to be. I believe it is a very interesting character to study and learn about, as well it makes me very interested on how the author themselves thought of such an interesting character such as Count Dracula himself.

The location is in eastern Europe, and it is not a place I would like to visit based on the evenings and nights described by the narrator of the book, which is Jonathan Harker. Alone from chapter 1 alone, Harker described the nights as "grim", and "queer", where in that time meant very unsettling and disturbing, such as how there were statements of hearing howling and hissing throughout the nights while the narrator had slept. It is very symbolic because of how many characters in the novel has claimed that midnight on St. George's Day is the most darkest time of their town, and is where evil is at it's strongest.

The narration is unreliable, the reason why because of how it is in writings from Jonathan Harker's journal, meaning that there is only one point of view, and gives us less information about certain characters and events that will happen. Such as how people on Harker's journey to Count Dracula's castle have evoked very heavy sympathetic moods and tried to dissuade Harker to visit his castle. While even that seems alarming already, because of the lack of other point of views or more understanding or development of characterization through the text has left out a lot of information that may be important towards the whole plot and many of the themes of the novel.

Jonathan Harker-
Overall right now in the novel, I do like the character. Even though he is rationalized throughout the limited text as a proper business Englishmen, such as how he says very mean things about the peasants he has seen throughout his journey. The reason I like this character is because of even how the setting of the starting of the novel seems out of the narrators element, it is very intriguing of how this man will go to claim this piece of real estate from Dracula.

I personally can connect with Jonathan Harker with certain depths and lengths I would go that would help me succeed highly in the future. I have done many of things and gone to many places so I could excel in my future of aviation, not to mention how much time I had spent and had to meet random people just to succeed in my career. It may not be as worrisome as walking through the lands as to what is now Romania such as how it was described in the horrifying novel, but many have people have tried to dissuade me into pursuing certain things in aviation, even though I knew that there were going to be hardships throughout the journey, I still wanted to stick with it no matter what.

Personally I believe that Bram Stoker really does very well in many of ways throughout his novel, "Dracula". One great way he has displayed great writing elements is his use of juxtaposition in the novel, such as whenever Jonathan Harker, a wealthy English businessmen is talking to peasants in the same place while speaking in a condescending manner towards them, and as well it was while they trying to help him and try to warn him about Dracula, making it very ironic as well. One thing as well that is very well thought out in the novel is the pacing of it. Such as how Stoker really knows how to time the conversations between the characters direct dialogue and the Jonathan Harker's stream of consciousness. In addition as well I very much do favor chronologically ordered novels which is what this one is which is in my opinion is the greatest kind of character development methods I believe is the best. In conclusion, I am really enjoying this novel so far.

Assignment #5-Thematic Conclusion

I believe that the most apparent theme that is presented in the novel, 'Dracula', is that you should stand up for what you feel is right. To support that statement, it is shown already in the first couple of chapters of the novel, Harker had been warned so many times by peasants and other people during his travels to Transylvania of how the castle of Dracula was not worth the price, but even though that Harker felt uneasy and thought he should go back to England, but then thought it was a bad choice for business and went anyways. By doing that as well, caused a certain motion of events that soon led his fiancee to be bitten by Dracula and made the future of Harker unsettling overall. Harker is a great mind, but became vulnerable to greed rather than his own future's safety. Many people had tried to help Harker on his way and as well got a very ironic future by ignoring all the warnings from helpful people even though they were from the lower class, but Harker still liked to ignore them because he thought he was so much better than them.
I can relate to this theme in a very personal way, there have been many times in my life where I have thought that something is off with my way of life or the way things have approached me in the past is not very settling or right. I have made many mistakes in the past and the only real solution that you can do is to realize your mistakes and try to redeem yourself in the future and hope for the best. I believe that this novel is very important to read for anyone, because it shows real life aspects that somebody may be perceiving other people as, but don't give them the light of day for a chance, and don't realize what consequences could happen to you, if you do not keep a wide acceptance of everybody's opinions and need to keep an open mind for anything in the future.

-Song: Keep your head up by Andy Grammer
"There is a reason why all things are as they are." As in the novel, Harker seems to deny everything in his path. While his journey to the castle was hard enough, he just wants to try the best for his company. He wants to try to keep his head up and have a good future for him and his fiancee.
-Song:
“I am all in a sea of wonders. I doubt; I fear; I think strange things, which I dare not confess to my own soul.”
-“Despair has its own calms.”
-“No man knows till he has suffered from the night how sweet and dear to his heart and eye the morning can be.”
-“The last I saw of Count Dracula was his kissing his hand to me, with a red light of triumph in his eyes, and with a smile that Judas in hell might be proud of.”
-"It is just as that dear, good Professor Van Helsing said: he is true grit, and he improves under strain that would kill a weaker nature."

-"Harker smiled—actually smiled—the dark bitter smile of one who is without hope; but at the same time his action belied his words, for his hands instinctively sought the hilt of the great Kukri knife and rested there."
-"To one thing I have made up my mind; if we find out that Mina must be a vampire in the end, then she shall not go into that unknown and terrible land alone. I suppose it is thus that in old times one vampire meant many; just as their hideous bodies could only rest in sacred earth, so the holiest love was the recruiting sergeant for their ghastly ranks."
