We love the HMH writing resource! Easy to follow, (lots of resources within the writing TE), and already seeing huge growth in our writing!

Q: Time- that’s been a challenge to fit it all in
And after today heating teams at other schools are also having a hard time fitting it all in.

A: Yes time is always tough! As we begin to streamline & focus our instruction on specific & explicit skills, as opposed to allowing a lesson/resource to control our instruction, this will become more streamlined. Please refer to the Sample Balanced Literacy schedules from the Project Literacy Learning back in August, and on your TL presentation this November to help. Also, know that the curriculum writers developed lesson to be taught in 15 min. increments, and we must plan intentionally to ensure we are chunking content into manageable learning pieces.

Our curriculum writers are finishing up Unit 6 right now & we will let you know which myBooks you can send home.

Q: The MOY Tier 2 criteria- is it does not meet expectations or Approaches expectations?

A: Best practice is to consider many, many data points when assessing a students need for intervention support. This criteria was developed to give teachers a "starting point" for data to consider when making decisions for students. The Does Not Meets expectation is a better indicator of students needing more support, as opposed to the Approaches Expectation, as this only identifies students who are minimally behind expectation for this point in the year, and these students can be easily caught up through targeted instruction.

We are told to teach systematic phonics instruction, but what does that look like and how do we fit it all in?

A: Within the balanced literacy sample schedules classrooms have time allocated to provide explicit phonics/foundational skills instruction each day.

Q: what level assigned?

A: Teachers do not assign students to a specific level. The program does that. Not sure about this question, but to clarify, students are screened when they first get on to iRead & then the program adapts to what students need, and guides them through learning based on mastery & need.
