In the short story, "Reunion" Cheever states, "He put his arm around me and I smelled my father the way my mother sniffs a rose. It was a rich compound of whiskey, after-shave lotion, shoe polish, woolens, and the rankness of the mature male" (Cheever). The authors choice of words describes the father's looks. In the short story, "The Lottery," Old Man Warner adds to a conversation about quitting the lottery. He says, "'Nothing but trouble in that,' Old Man Warner said stoutly. 'Pack of young fools'" (Jackson). What Warner says insinuates that he is stubborn, and very tradition driven because he does not want to quit the lottery and reprimands other towns for doing so.
